Louis van Gaal has mixed memories of his time as Manchester United coach, enjoying some success but ultimately being dismissed after two seasons, however he has urged Erik ten Hag to join a football club rather than a commercial club.
The veteran Dutch coach was vocal about his opposition to Ed Woodward's commercial focus during his time working with him at Old Trafford, especially with regards to transfers and pre-season tours.
"I think Erik ten Hag is a great coach, he's shown that several times, and a great coach is always good for Manchester United," Van Gaal declared at a press conference.
"Erik ten Hag needs a football club, not a commercial club and Manchester United are a commercial club."
Van Gaal won the FA Cup during his tenure with the club, but criticism of his playing style led to a dismissal at the end of the 2015/16 season.
Despite stating he would retire after leaving Old Trafford, Van Gaal returned to the Dutch national team, but has spoken out against Qatar hosting the World Cup in 2022.
"How does FIFA say it? To develop the football there. That is bullsh*t," he explained.
"It doesn't matter, it's about money, commercial interests, that's the main motive of FIFA.
"Why do you think I'm not a member of the FIFA commission, with my UEFA expertise? Because I have always kept my distance against these kind of organisations."
