Robin van Persie admits he had a turbulent working relationship with Louis van Gaal during their time at Manchester United together.

The Dutch forward had shone for United during his debut season at Old Trafford and finished as the club's top scorer as they won their final Premier League trophy under Sir Alex Ferguson.

David Moyes replaced the retiring Ferguson the following season before being subsequently succeeded by Van Persie's national team boss Van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup.

Van Persie had shone under Van Gaal in the summer tournament in Brazil but was unable to recapture his best form under his compatriot at Old Trafford.

The former Arsenal forward saw himself in and out of the team under Van Gaal and was stripped of the club's penalty taking duties before being sold to Turkish side Fenerbahce at the end of the season.

Van Persie admits his working relationship with Van Gaal took a turn for the worst following his departure from Old Trafford but insists they are 'lovely again' now.

"That started off awkward," Van Persie admitted in a Twitter Q&A session.

"Shortly afterwards it was great for two years. Then we had a small dip for a year but now it's lovely again.

"That's life guys!"
