Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has said that the club's star keeper David de Gea is replaceable, as the club continue to draw out contract negotiations with their No 1.
'The decision will have to come at some point,' Van der Sar told Marca. 'It takes a long time, so it is a yes or no decision. But I am not a manager of Manchester United, but other goalkeepers can fill the void.'
'There are goalkeepers in the Premier League who are playing in clubs that want to step forward,' he said. 'I went to Manchester as a 34-year-old, so there are many opportunities there.
'De Gea has been at a high level for a long time and at certain points, you realize, maybe not the first two but when people start writing about it. But he will be fine because he is a great goalkeeper.'
Van der Sar's comments make interesting reading for United fans, with some calling for their former goalkeeper to return to Manchester to take up the role of director of football at the club.
