Virgil van Dijk has confirmed his commitment to Liverpool, and revealed his future at the club could be resolved within the next two months.
The Dutchman entered the season of one of three key Liverpool players who had entered the final year of their contracts. The Reds' captain, Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all yet to extend their futures at Anfield, with just a matter of months left until the expiry of their deals.
Despite the uncertainty, Liverpool have progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League, final of the Carabao Cup and currently lead the Premier League, in Arne Slot's first season in charge. The feel-good factor and speculation around the Reds trio has not seen their contract situations worked out yet however.
Van Dijk remains focused on what he can achieve on Merseyside this season however. The veteran defender wants to taste success in 2024/25 but has also hinted there will 'definitely' be information on his future in the coming months.
“It’s all about the next couple of months," Van Dijk told ex-Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp in an interview for Sky Sports. "To make sure we give everything.
“We are still in three competitions and we want to be successful in all three of them. And that is the main focus I’ve got. Very, very big plans in that sense. I want to make sure that this team is successful and that’s my main focus at the moment.
“I can’t speak about personal conversations that have obviously been going on for a while. I can only say that I am fully committed to the club. I love the fans, I love the club. I’ve had such an amazing time already.
“Let’s see what the future brings. But as long as I’m calm, I think the rest of the world can stay calm as well.
“When there is a definite answer on my future, it will probably be out. Then everyone can know. I’m quite calm about it.
“It’s quite funny because I remember when Gini - obviously a friend of mine - Wijnaldum was out of contract and in his last six months at the club, I said to him I couldn’t believe how calm he was.
“But now being in the situation myself, I’m in a very good place. Physically, mentally. The only focus I have at the moment is trying to be successful with Liverpool.
“That is the main focus. And be the best captain and player I can be for the team and the club.
“What will happen in the future? At this point, I have no idea. But I think in the next couple of months there will definitely be some information about that.”
