Kylian Mbappe, Scott McTominay and Sunderland were the weekend's big winners, while Aston Villa and Lazio in particular suffered disappointing results. Flashscore takes a look at the winners and losers of the latest footballing weekend.
Winner: Kylian Mbappe
Criticised last year at PSG and then singled out for criticism when he arrived at Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe has finally dispelled any doubts. Admittedly, he was unable to take his team to any trophies, but individually, the No. 9 more than fulfilled his objectives by finishing as Europe's top scorer, a first for a French player since Thierry Henry twenty years ago.
With 43 goals and five assists in 56 appearances in all competitions, Mbappe has had a superb season.
Losers: Aston Villa
In the race for the Champions League all season, the Villans missed out on the final step on Sunday. At Manchester United, the team coached by Unai Emery came up short after some controversial referee decisions as they lost 2-0. In the standings, Villa finished sixth, level on points with Newcastle and will have to make do with the Europa League in 2025/2026.
Winners: McTominay and Napoli
Who would have thought that a Scot who had never left British football could perform so well in Italy? Probably nobody. On Friday, Scott McTominay crowned his superb individual season with a trophy by keeping Inter at bay on the final day of the league. Better still, the former Manchester United midfielder paved the way to the title by scoring the opening goal of the game against Cagliari (2-0).
Losers: AC Milan and Lazio
At the other end of the table, the Rossoneri ended their season with a narrow 2-0 win over Monza. With 63 points, Milan finished eighth and will not play in Europe next season for the first time since 2020.
The defeat to Bologna in the Italian Cup final is therefore likely to leave its mark, while an overhaul is expected to take place this summer to start afresh. Lazio, meanwhile, will not be in Europe in 2025/2026 either. Worse still, their Roman rivals have done better thanks to Claudio Ranieri, despite Roma being far behind at the start of the season.
Winners: Sporting Lisbon
There were contrasting stories in Portugal too, as Sporting once again got the better of their Benfica rivals. Thanks to their hero Viktor Gyokeres, the Lions stunned the Eagles in stoppage time in the Portuguese Cup final, before coming out on top in extra time (3-1).
For the first time since 2002, Sporting have achieved the domestic double. As in recent seasons, their team is likely to be shaken up.
Losers: Benfica
Benfica have lost everything in the space of a few days. Above all, Angel Di Maria has bid farewell to the Lisbon club in the worst possible way. With league and cup defeats against their rivals, Benfica are going through a difficult period. Like every summer, there are likely to be some moves, but the aim is to win the league.
Winners: Sunderland
Eight years ago, the Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League, but that is now history. On Sunday, the team coached by Regis Le Bris secured their promotion in injury time against Sheffield United.
As if on cue, it was young Englishman Tom Watson, who came from the youth team, who scored the winner late on.
Losers: Sheffield United
For the Blades, this means no promotion and they will remain in the Championship next season. That's hard to take, as it's yet another disappointment after last year's relegation. It remains to be seen whether Sheffield United can bounce back in 2025/2026.
