Wayne Rooney has hinted that his transfer to Derby is partly down to his and wife Coleen wanting to bring up their four children in the UK.

Striker Rooney completed a shock move to Championship side Derby from Washington-based DC United on an 18-month player-coach deal, where he will work with Dutch icon Phillip Cocu.

Rooney will complete the current MLS season with United before officially joining the Rams in January.

Before the move it was suggested that Coleen was unsettled Stateside and wanted to return to the UK with their three sons Kai, nine, Klay, six, Kit, three, and 17-month-old daughter Cass.

And in quotes made to DC United to announce his departure, Rooney admitted: "While the decision to move home was a tough one, family is everything to us and we make this change to be closer to the ones we love back in England.

"The opportunity to go back home and start the next step of my career in coaching was the factor that made my mind up."

Manchester United legend Rooney scored 25 times in 45 appearances at DC United after moving from Premier League club Everton last summer.

He is both the England national team and the Red Devils' record goal scorer after an epic career - which has seen him win the Premier League five times, along with an FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League.
