Wesley Fofana revealed Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has an instituted a policy of back to basics since his return to the club.

Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge on an interim basis earlier this month, succeeding Graham Potter in the dugout following the former Brighton boss' sacking.

Fofana has now played under three managers since joining Chelsea, after being signed by Thomas Tuchel in August prior to the German's departure the following month.

Although his debut season at the club has been hampered by injuries, Fofana stated his excitement to play under the former England star and gave an insight into the 44-year-old's philosophy for his second spell in charge.

'He was welcomed back in the best way possible, because he's Mr. Frank Lampard. He's a club legend.' Fofana told Telefoot.

'He told us to get our confidence back, and play simple football again. To get back to the basics, really.

'Frank Lampard's words moved us all, because it's what we needed, to get our confidence back. And to realise that we're fighting for a club. We're fighting for a great club.'

Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign, the Blues remain on of just two English sides to have reached the last eight of the Champions League.

A 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first-leg of the quarter final has left progression to the final four a difficult task for the Blues, but Fofana remarked that he is confident they can turn the deficit around.

'Chelsea have already done it after a difficult season before, with a new coach arriving.

'They won it in 2021. So I think it's possible, it's in the club's DNA. We've had a bad season, we know that. Now it's up to us to show what we're capable of. There is quality in this squad.'
