West Ham United are reportedly lining up a move for Marseille's Dimitri Payet as the Hammers eye a sensational reunion with their former star.

The Hammers are in the market for an attacking player this January transfer window, with the east London club expressing an interest in Bournemouth star Ryan Fraser.

And according to L'Equipe, the Premier League side are eyeing up a return for France international Payet, 32, who left the club in 2017 under dubious circumstances.

During his two-year spell at West Ham, the Frenchman fast became a fan favourite having stirred magnificent performances for The Hammers, earning him a reputation as the club's talisman.

Payet scored 15 goals and provided 23 assists during his stint in the Premier League between 2015 and 2017. A return to east London may come as a surprise to the West Ham faithful after their former star forced a move away from the club.

In January 2017, Payet refused to play for the club as he wished to return to his homeland. West Ham had initially rejected two bids from the French club for their star man before accepting a bid of £25million - a club record sale.

Following his exit, a mural installed to tribute the player was replaced by one of Andy Carroll scoring a bicycle kick against Crystal Palace.

32-year-old Payet has scored eight goals and provided four assists from 19 games in all competitions for Marseille this season, and would provide much needed creativity in a West Ham side severely lacking it.

David Moyes' side were defeated 4-1 by Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday night and hover just above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
