Over the years, Manchester United have been synonymous with exceptionally talented young footballers, either through the highly-regarded academy system or buying them with the assistance of their scouting network.
Players like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford were all young talents at some stage in their United careers, before going on to achieve great success at United and, for some, also elsewhere.
But, there have also been many young players who failed to live up to their early promise at Old Trafford, and were moved on when it was clear they wouldn't reach the standard required to succeed at the club.
So, what happened to these former United wonderkids?
In the list below where players who had significant potential, according to previous versions of Football Manager anyway, who never quite reached the potential that the game suggested they had.
Rodrigo Possebon
Possebon was a promising midfielder who joined United from Brazilian side Internacional, but failed to make the grade at the club, making only three appearances before returning to Brazil with Santos in 2010.
The Brazilian failed to live up to his potential and hasn't made more than 12 league appearances for any of the nine teams he played for since leaving Old Trafford.
Chris Eagles
Eagles was a gifted technical winger with genuine technical skill, but never quite reached his full potential in the game.
The best moment of his United career was *that* goal against Everton at Goodison Park back in April 2007, in what was his very first senior goal.
But Eagles only make six league appearances in total for United before moving to Burnley in 2008. The now 34-year-old played for clubs like Bolton, Charlton, Bury, Blackpool, Port Vale, Ross County and most recently, Oldham Athletic, before his contract was mutually terminated in January 2020.
Dong Fangzhuo
Dong Fangzhuo is often remembered as being a real flop at United, but his story was far more complicated than that.
United signed the young striker in 2004 after some hugely impressive seasons in China, but because of work permit issues, he was sent on loan for several seasons to gain first team experience elsewhere.
His best season came in the 2005/06 season with Royal Antwerp, scoring 18 goals, and he then joined the United first team pre-season squad in the summer of 2006.
His only Premier League appearance for the club came in May 2007, but the striker wasn't really close to the first team squad, regularly appearing for the reserve side, before eventually being released in August 2008.
His career never really took off, joining clubs like Legia Warsaw, Dalian Shide, Armenian side Mika and another Chinese side Hebei Zhongji in 2014.
Now 35 years old, Dong is without a club.
Ben Amos
Amos was a hugely promising young goalkeeper who was sent on loan deal after loan deal, spending time at clubs like Peterborough, Molde, Bolton, Carlisle, Cardiff and Millwall, before being released in June 2015.
Now 30, Amos is currently at Championship side Charlton, but is yet to make a league appearance for the Addicks.
But, on Football Manager, Amos would always become the club's number one.
Ritchie De Laet
De Laet started his career at Belgian side Royal Antwerp, before joining Stoke City and then Manchester United in 2009.
But despite his initial promise and potential, the defender only made three league appearances in his time at Old Trafford and left in 2012 to join Leicester City.
Spells at Middlesbrough and Aston Villa followed, before rejoining Antwerp in June 2019 on a free transfer.
Angelo Henriquez
One of the most promising young players United have ever had, or at least Football Manager thought so anyway.
But Henriquez's Old Trafford career never really worked out and still aged just 26, he's currently back in Chile with Universidad de Chile.
Check out Henriquez's full in-depth story here.
Zoran Tosic
Manchester United splashed out around £8 million for Partizan youngster Tosic in January 2009 after the Serbian impressed in the European Under 21 Championships.
A direct winger with loads of talent, Tosic would only make five appearances in total for United before being shipped off on loan to German side FC Cologne in the 2009/10 season.
After a decent loan spell in Germany, United sold Tosic to Russian side CSKA Moscow, where Tosic made a real impact in a seven-year spell, scoring 47 goals in 247 appearances. He then re-joined Partizan in 2017, before moving to Chinese side Taizhou Yuanda in 2020.
Adem Ljajic
The signings of Ljajic and Tosic were announced at the same time, both joining from Partizan. But, whilst Tosic joined United immediately, Ljajic had to wait a year until he could join the club officially.
An attacking midfielder with huge potential, there was real excitement about the youngster's talent.
United actually pulled out of the deal to sign Ljajic due to work permit issues before confirming the signing in January 2010, so the Serbian youngster never played an official game for the club.
Ljajic has since gone on to have a decent career playing at clubs like Fiorentina, Roma, Inter Milan, Torino and most recently, Besiktas, still aged just 28.
Marnick Vermijl
United pounced for the promising Belgian full-back in 2010, after coming through the youth system at Standard Liege.
But, Vermijl would have to wait until September 2012 to register his first appearance for the club, after becoming a regular with the reserve side.
The defender joined NEC for the 2013/14 season, before returning to United in 2014/15 to make one last senior appearance, before being sold to Sheffield Wednesday in February 2015. He's since played for Preston North-End, Scunthorpe United and most recently, Dutch side MVV Maastricht, aged still only 28.
James Wilson
Known for his electric speed and lethal finishing on Football Manager games, Wilson was a striker with real potential.
A product of the United academy system, Wilson was a regular scorer for the youth teams and made an immediate impression on his first team debut, scoring twice against Hull City in May 2014.
But after several disappointing loan spells at Brighton, Derby, Sheffield United and Aberdeen, Wilson was finally released at the end of the 2018/19 season.
Still only 24 years old, Wilson signed for Salford City in January 2020, scoring two goals on his debut for the club. Maybe there's still time for Wilson to realise his potential.
