What happened to 17 Man Utd players who debuted under Mourinho?

  /  autty

Here is a review of all the 17 players who debuted under Jose Mourinho and how they developed after that.

Eric Bailly

Named man of the match on his bow in the 2016 Community Shield against Leicester City and ended his first August in England as United's player of the month. Bailly's first season was marred by a six-week lay-off and suspension for the Europa League final, but he justified what was a hefty £30million fee at the time.

Bailly has started fewer United games in the last three seasons than his first but had regained form prior to the suspension of football. United triggered the two-year extension in his contract in January.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Was the matchwinner on his first United appearance at Wembley and followed it up with goalscoring Premier League and Old Trafford debuts. Ibrahimovic turned 35 in 2016-17 yet was on course to become United's first 30-goal season striker since Robin van Persie until he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Eventually re-signed for a second season but was a shadow of his former self.

Ibrahimovic revived his career in the Major League Soccer retirement home and rejoined AC Milan at the age of 38 in the New Year.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Mkhitaryan came on late in the Community Shield triumph and did not play much more over the next few months amid a prolonged period of adaptation. Was at his best in the Europa League and scored the second in the 2017 final triumph over Ajax to cap a successful season.

The Armenian playmaker began 2017-18 well but soon faltered and he was involved in the swap deal that included Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal offloaded him to Roma on loan in the summer.

A suspension from the Italian league carried over to the Premier League and Pogba had to wait another week to finally start for United all those years after Sir Alex Ferguson selected Ezekiel Fryers ahead of him. Pogba lined up alongside Marouane Fellaini in a 2-0 Friday night win over Southampton.

Pogba won the League Cup and Europa League in his first season back with United but his last three seasons have been fraught and he revelled in the sacking of Mourinho on Twitter. Said it was 'time for a new challenge elsewhere' last summer but is still at United and, due to the world health crisis, could be marooned in Manchester for another year.

Joel Pereira

Emerged in the FA Cup fourth round win over Wigan Athletic and a few months later Mourinho said his compatriot could be 'the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation'. Pereira made his only United start in the final league game of 2016-17 against Crystal Palace.

Pereira, now 23, received a generous four-year contract in the summer of 2017 and has not played for United since. He has spent time on loan at Vitoria Setubal, Kortrijk, and Hearts.

Axel Tuanzebe

Mourinho marvelled at Tuanzebe's cameo in the July 2016 friendly win over Wigan and six months later he came on against Wigan with Pereira. Three months later, Tuanzebe started at right-back against Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal, where he was the sole standout for United, and lined up in the last three league fixtures in midfield.

Tuanzebe Has become a fitful squad player at United since, due to various injuries and two loan spells at Aston Villa, the second of which he helped the club win promotion from the Championship.

He is now 22 and Tuanzebe had regained fitness prior to the coronavirus outbreak in the United Kingdom. Signed a three-year contract last summer and is effectively the fourth-choice centre half now Bailly has regained fitness.

Scott McTominay

The midfielder was first named in the United matchday squad against Swansea City at the end of April 2017 and a week later McTominay was introduced with the game lost at Arsenal. With the Europa League prioritised, McTominay started in the 2-0 triumph over Crystal Palace on the final day with Pereira, Demetri Mitchell, and Josh Harrop.

Mourinho has been proved prescient in his nurturing of McTominay, who has established himself as a United-class midfielder over the last year. Had been a certain starter all season until he left Old Trafford on crutches on Boxing Day, but McTominay's recovery was capped by that stoppage-time clincher against City in last month's derby.

Demetri Mitchell

Nicky Butt converted one-time forward Mitchell into a left-back at junior level and the Mancunian acquitted himself impressively there against Palace nearly three years ago. That remains Mitchell's only appearance.

Josh Harrop

One shot crowned Harrop's one-shot with United. The Stockport-born attacker opened the scoring against Palace and, despite the offer of an extension, Harrop chose to leave United and sign for Preston North End.

Angel Gomes

Became the fourth-youngest United player at 16 years and 263 days when he replaced Wayne Rooney against Palace. Gomes made a long-awaited first career start against Astana in September but has only started twice since and is approaching the last two months of his contract.

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku was initially more prolific than Ibrahimovic and got off the mark against Real Madrid in the Super Cup defeat at the start of 2017-18. Netted a brace on his league and Old Trafford debut against West Ham United and also registered on his first appearances in the Champions League and FA Cup for United.

A respectable 27-goal first season was followed by an underwhelming 15-goal haul last term. Lukaku was dropped by Mourinho in October and admitted he was carrying too much weight after the World Cup. His face did not fit under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Lukaku left in a £73m deal for Inter Milan, where he has plundered 23 goals.

Nemanja Matic

Matic arrived in late July 2017 but his familiarity with Mourinho and Premier League experience made him an instant hit at United. Like Lukaku, Matic started in the Super Cup loss in Skopje and Mourinho's filho was a fixture in the United side for two years.

Now 31, Matic has enjoyed a recent lease of life at United, keeping McTominay out of the team, and had his contract extended by a year last month.

Victor Lindelof

After an unconvincing pre-season, new £30.9million addition Lindelof kept his place for the 2017 Super Cup but only because Mourinho was saving suspended duo Eric Bailly and Phil Jones for the weekend opener. Lindelof was not even on the bench for the shellacking of West Ham in while his wife was pictured quaffing champagne in a hospitality box.

The Swede had to wait more than two months for a meaningful league appearance at Huddersfield - where he was at fault for both goals in a 2-1 loss. Lindelof took the best part of a year to get going at United and was unfortunate not to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in 2018-19. Signed a new five-year contract in September but has regressed in 2019-20.

Alexis Sanchez

As a colleague wrote, the only time he was in tune was in his announcement video. Sanchez was an exorbitant Michael Owen: a 29-year-old busted flush signed on a 'free' who helped United to a derby win and scored at Wembley. He has not been missed during a horrendous season-long loan at Inter Milan.

Bought to replace the retired Michael Carrick, £52m Fred struggled in his first season with United but actually impressed on his debut against Leicester City. That was the first of just six league starts under Mourinho, whose preferred target was the unattainable Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona.

Fred

Fred has encountered setbacks under Solskjaer; going 53 days without playing, missing a chunk of pre-season to get married, and exclusions from the first four squads of the current campaign. He has recovered to become a certain starter and is arguably United's most improved player this term.

Diogo Dalot

Injury delayed Dalot's debut until the Champions League group opener against Young Boys in September 2018 and he immediately impressed. "I think everybody could see the potential and everybody could see that he is a 19-year-old player who has more than 10 years to play for Manchester United," Mourinho said.

Dalot's durability has hardly improved, though, and United recruited Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer. Dalot, 21, now struggles to make the United bench.

Grant

The third-choice 'keeper was heavily involved in the 2018 tour of the United States due to injury to Sergio Romero, but only managed one appearance under Mourinho after Romero was sent off in the League Cup third round tie with Derby County.

Grant, 37, made a fine save in regulation time but failed to stop any of Derby's nine penalties in the shootout. Started for United in Astana in November and recently signed a new one-year contract.
