After being at Rochdale just last season, Andy Lonergan is now remarkably set for his Premier League bow with Liverpool.
The veteran goalkeeper, who turns 36 in October, will start for Liverpool away at Southampton on Saturday in the Premier League as they look to maintain their fast start to the season following their 4-1 victory over Norwich.
Never in a million years did Lonergan believe he would be called upon by Jurgen Klopp. But a calf injury to Alisson and then a bizarre setback to Adrian, who was accidentally caught on the ankle after a fan ran onto the pitch after the UEFA Super Cup victory, has given the shot-stopper the chance to shine.
WHO IS HE?
Lonergan spent the second half of last season in League One with Rochdale, joining as an emergency loan from Middlesbrough.
After signing a one-year contract with the Championship outfit, he was then released and became a free-agent in the summer.
But he has gained plenty of experience over the years, having started his career all the way back in 2000 with Preston North End. During those 19 years, he has played for a total of 12 other clubs.
After loan spells at Darlington, Blackpool, Wycombe and Swindon between 2002 and 2006, he went on to become a permanent fixture at Deepdale until 2011.
He made a total of 228 appearances for the club, keeping 55 clean sheets, conceding 311 goals and scoring once.
After his time at Deepdale came to an end, he then moved to Leeds for a season for a fee of around £325,000 before being brought by Bolton Wanderers, where he made 62 appearances and kept 15 clean sheets.
Following a three-year spell at Bolton, it was Fulham up next for Lonergan, who previously played for England's Under 21s, before being moved on to Wolves.
A return to Leeds came next in 2017, where he would make another 47 appearances overall before ending up at Middlesbrough at the start of last season.
SO... WHAT'S HE DOING AT LIVERPOOL?
While he might not have the pedigree needed to help guide Liverpool to a first Premier League title, he is getting his chance to prove to Klopp that he can count on him.
Having been released by Boro, the Reds signed Lonergan - who was born in Preston - as a short-term solution on a free transfer due to Liverpool's goalkeeping injury crisis.
Alisson is expected to be out for between six to eight weeks after being forced off with a calf injury in Liverpool's opening Premier League encounter against Norwich at Anfield.
Lonergan also provided cover for Simon Mignolet during Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States, which Alisson missed as he recovered from Brazil's Copa America triumph.
But now with Adrian picking up a bizarre injury and Mignolet having been sold to Club Brugge, he has been called upon.
Little did Klopp know that just a month later that he would have to put his faith in Lonergan to keep out potent attacking forces in the Premier League.
