Why David Luiz Arsenal transfer was able to go through after window had closed

Arsenal confirmed the signing of David Luiz after the transfer window had slammed shut on a hectic deadline day.

The Gunners agreed on a £8million transfer fee with Chelsea for the centre-back, who has reunited with manager Unai Emery after working together at Paris Saint-Germain.

The transfer window closed at 5pm on Thursday - and three hours later, Luiz was announced as an Arsenal signing.

The reason Arsenal were able to sign the player late was because they filled a deadline day deal sheet, given them until 7pm to finalise the deal.

A total of six deal sheets were submitted ahead of the 5pm deadline.

Luiz skipped training at Cobham on Wednesday as he attempted to push through a move away from Chelsea.

Frank Lampard made it clear Luiz wasn't going to be in his long term plans at Stamford Bridge.
