Wiegman given significant pay rise after signing new contract with England

England have given Sarina Wiegman a significant pay rise after the manager extended her contract until 2027.

It is understood Wiegman earned over £400,000 a year at last summer's World Cup, where the Lionesses were narrowly beaten by Spain in the final.

The United States announced that they had made Emma Hayes the highest-paid female manager in the world in October, with the Chelsea boss reportedly set to earn in the region of £1.3million.

Mail Sport understands FA officials are confident that Wiegman's new salary ranks in the top bracket for female coaches around the world, though she will still be paid less than Gareth Southgate - who earns around £5million a year.

Mark Bullingham, the Football Association's chief executive, described Wiegman as the No 1 coach in the world and indicated she will be paid a salary to match her status.

'What I would say is we see Sarina as the number one coach in the world in the women's game and we think that she's paid accordingly,' Bullingham said.

'I don't know what other people in other federation's are paid, but I can say I think she's paid accordingly.'

Wiegman is the most successful England manager of all time having led the Lionesses to a historic Euro 2022 victory on home turf before finishing as runners up at the World Cup.

Wiegman had been contracted until 2025 but said she had no doubts about extending her deal.

'No one was brave enough to ask,' Bullingham said. 'We didn't receive any approaches for her, we'd made really clear we wouldn't entertain any.

'The main driving decision was when it felt comfortable for Sarina, she had indicated after the World Cup it felt like the right time.

'For us, tournament success has always been absolutely critical. It's one of the key pillars of our strategy, not just because it's brilliant to win tournaments, but because it drives so many other things.

'You've seen the way that we, together with the Lionesses have driven the huge amount of growth in the women and girls game, we think there's more growth out there and we think having Sarina in role, helps us to have the best possible chance to win more tournaments, and also drive more growth in the game.

'We're fortunate to have two fantastic coaches of our senior teams and that's really evidenced by the fact that we've been in the top five in the world in both the men's and the women's game, which we think is a huge tribute to both of them and the work that they've done. Under them, we'd like to say the impossible job has never seemed more possible.'

'I don't think about my career too far ahead. I am in the moment now, I am enjoying this job and I feel we can improve a lot. I didn't have doubts and I want to stay around a while longer.

'Working for England, it is the biggest federation worldwide. England is at the highest level with the competition, with the players, with the way the FA approaches women's football.'

Wiegman admitted she was motivated by defeat in the World Cup final and England's failure to qualify for the Olympics on behalf of Team GB last year.

'I'm motivated anyway. Of course this motivates too. We had that disappointment, in the World Cup, we also won silver but we always want more. It's very hard. Playing finals is not easy.

'I think we've done very well but you always want more and thrive for more growth. Grow the game and help players in their development. We still have very good connections and I see lots of growth in this team.

'I think we can go further. We also know that the world around us is improving a lot and very quickly too. We have to be at the top of our game and I really like these challenges.'
