Georginio Wijnaldum played his last game for Liverpool on May 23 but his decision to leave has not been explained by the star or the club.

The 30-year-old was at Liverpool for five years, winning the Champions League and Premier League titles with them which earned him plaudits upon his departure.

Manager Jurgen Klopp dubbed him a Liverpool legend after his final match which saw the Reds claim Champions League qualification.

Wijnaldum was given a standing ovation during the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, which gave Liverpool a third place league finish and the all important qualification for European football next season.

Wijnaldum is now training in Portugal with the Holland team ahead of the Euros this summer.

He said from the training ground: "I will explain that some time, but it is not that it just comes from me.

"I decided not to sign a new contract for nothing. I explained it to my Liverpool teammates. They understand me completely."

And while nothing has yet been confirmed, he has been linked with Spanish giants Barcelona.

The move has had a delay as his national team are reportedly not allowing the star to have his medical until after the Euros finish, according to  Voetbal International .

"Those players will have to be patient until after the tournament [to undergo their medicals]," said Holland's coach Frank De Boer.

However, Wijnaldum has not let the setback dull the spark of the transfer rumour as he has said he cannot deny that discussions are happening.

He told Marca: "I cannot deny the contacts.

"I have just signed off from Liverpool and it is an interesting situation for many clubs."

And while he looks to the next chapter of his career, he sent Liverpool fans a heartfelt message after his last game for the club.

He wrote on social media: "It's really emotional for me right now, I'm very happy that we managed to get the third place and secure Champions League football for the club next season.

"On the other hand I'm fighting back the tears, the people in Liverpool have showed me so much love in the last five years. It's very hard to say goodbye.

"The fans singing my name, the prizes we won, I will never forget the amazing things we achieved with this fantastic club. We shared unforgettable moments together, no one can ever take that from us.

"I would have loved to remain a Liverpool player for many more years, but unfortunately things went different. I have to start a new adventure."

And though no explanation has yet been given to fans on his departure he added he will tell the story behind the move at some point.

"The situation right now is that as of July 1st, I'm not a Liverpool player anymore. We will see what I will do in the next couple of weeks. I will rest a little bit and then go to the national team.

"I will have a look at my story and how everything went. The fans deserve to know the story behind it."
