Wilfried Zaha is ready to play at the very top and would be welcomed with open arms by Real Madrid, according to Greame Souness.

Zaha had been linked with big-money moves away from Selhurst in the summer following an impressive campaign last term, but ignored speculation and remained loyal to his boyhood club by signing a bumper new five-year deal.

Souness, however, believes the 25-year-old may have missed a trick and hailed him as a 'unique talent,' ahead of Palace's clash against Watford.

'I think he is sensational. You might laugh at this, but I can see him playing for Real Madrid, that’s how good he is,' Souness told Sky Sports.

'There’s only a handful of players, even outside the Premier League that have got his kind of ability.

'His change of direction and the balance he has got is quite unique and I think that is why he gets fouled and should get more penalties than he does. I don’t see him as a diver and I think he has got quite a unique talent.

'With the utmost respect to Crystal Palace, maybe he has been scarred by his experience at Manchester United, but he is ready for a big, big club, the biggest clubs.

'Again, with the utmost of respect to Crystal Palace, if he stays there he will end his career with no trophies, no medals and say what if. I think he’s ready now to go to a big club, even if it is to one of the two big clubs in Spain, I think both of those would welcome him with open arms.

'He’s a door opener, there just isn’t too many of those players around. He’s unique in our football and I’m an enormous fan of his and I think, I’m thinking of Laurie Cunningham who left West Brom and went to Real Madrid, he is in that league, he has got the stuff that gets you on the edge of your seat, he is a unique player
