Wissa promises more to come after injury-hit start to Newcastle career

Yoane Wissa has promised Newcastle United supporters the best is still to come after an injury-hit start to his St. James Park career.

Wissa arrived at Newcastle in the summer for a reported £50m transfer fee from Brentford after scoring 19 goals in the Premier League for the Bees in 2024-25.

The 29-year-old was brought in, alongside Nick Woltemade, to fill the gap left by Alexander Isak, who made the switch to Liverpool in a British record deal.

However, the DR Congo international sustained a knee injury just days after signing, keeping him out for the first three months of the 2025-26 campaign.

Wissa scored his first goals for the Magpies during a 2-1 win over Fulham in their EFL Cup quarter-final, and he is confident that will be the first of many for his new club.

"There's more to come for sure. As I said, I'm not in a perfect peak yet. It's going to take a few weeks to build up, and I know I've got a step to achieve," Wissa told Sky Sports.

"But I know who I am. I'm a hard worker. I love playing football. And yes, I hope I'm going to score many goals here. And I know I'm not 100%, but there's more to come for sure.

"I hope I score a lot of goals, a lot of assists and a lot of wins. This is what we need now. We need a big momentum now as the season is getting tougher and tougher.

"We need a big momentum and, for myself, a lot of goals and happy moments. This is just what I need now.

"[Start to life in Newcastle] has been strange, but it's my destiny. But as I said, I'm glad I had this moment I was injured as I could take the time to settle here with my family.

"But it's been frustrating, especially the last four weeks at the end of the rehab, because I really want to be in this club.

"But I think we took the time perfectly and managed well to come back stronger."

Wissa elected against joining up with DR Congo for their Africa Cup of Nations campaign as he aims to regain his match fitness for Eddie Howe's side.

Newcastle face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with Wissa netting just once in his eight Premier League appearances against the Red Devils.

The Magpies are 11th in the Premier League table, but know a win against Ruben Amorim's side could take them to within three points of the top four.

Newcastle did the league double over United last season, including a 2-0 win in this exact fixture.

They have, however, failed to win consecutive visits to Old Trafford since March 1935, while they last won three in a row against the Red Devils in January 1922.
