Wolves are plotting to go toe-toe with Manchester United to sign Benfica wonderkid Joao Felix.

The West Midlands club have been monitoring the highly-rated 19-year-old closely and reportedly sent scouts to watch him in action this week.

United are currently in pole position to sign the Portugal starlet but a number of a high-profile clubs around Europe are also interested in the £100m midfielder.

Felix, who has played 29 times and scored 11 goals in all competitions for Benfica this season, is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes who also deals with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho.

Wolves are hoping to utilize their connections with Mendes to get Felix to move to Molineux in the summer.

The club already have a large Portuguese contingent with Mendes brokering deals for the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio over the past two seasons.

However, the club has significantly less pulling power than the European powerhouses who are also preparing to make a swoop for Felix over the coming months.

The youngster only signed a new long-term deal at Benfica earlier this season but has a release clause believed to be in the region of £100m.

As well as United, Italian giants Juventus have also expressed an interest in Felix with the club's sporting director Fabio Paratici holding talks with Benfica officials only last month.

Felix has also previously talked about his desire to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, telling Tuttosport: 'I'd like to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo because he's simply the best. He's an idol, a world icon, an example for everyone.

'All the best Portuguese players have gone to play in the most important foreign leagues, and of course I'd like to do that too.'

Felix's team-mate and compatriot Ruben Dias is also in high demand with Untied considering a £155m double swoop for the pair in the summer.
