Wolves to fight Daniel Podence's FA charge for allegedly spitting in 1-1 draw with Forest

Wolves will contest the FA charge against forward Daniel Podence for allegedly spitting at an opponent.

Podence was not penalised by referee Chris Kavanagh or VAR for the clash with Brennan Johnson during Wolves' 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on April 1, but the FA imposed the punishment after reviewing the incident.

A six-match ban is the standard penalty for spitting incidents but Wolves plan to argue that although Podence appeared to make a spitting motion towards Johnson, he did not actually spit. They have until April 14 to submit their response after the FA extended the deadline by 48 hours due to the recent Bank Holiday.

Writing on his social media channels last week, Podence said: 'As I have been accused of something I haven't done... will make it clear: I did not spit on Nottingham's player. I'm telling the truth and I would never do such a thing, even more to a colleague.'

Interviewed after the game, Johnson said: 'I'm not going to allegate (sic) him, but I felt like some sort of spit came towards my face.

'The referees have had a look at it, so it's done now. I'm completely fine with it.

'Maybe they didn't see something that I did see, so at the end of the day they didn't give a red card and I just had to get on with the rest of the game.'

Both sides are involved in the relegation scrap and losing Podence, their most potent attacking threat this term, would be a huge blow to Wolves.

As well as Podence, Forest assistant Alan Tate and Wolves counterpart Pablo Sainz were charged with improper conduct after both were shown the red card. Forest were also charged with failing to control their players.

It was the second fiery clash between the clubs this year after both were fined for the brawl that followed Forest's penalty shoot-out win in the Carabao Cup tie at the City Ground in January.
