World Cup: Declan Rice was England top runner against Senegal with Kyle Walker fastest

Declan Rice covered over 12km and put in 62 sprints in a lung-busting effort during the 3-0 win over Senegal as England's World Cup running stats are revealed.

Harry Kane and Luke Shaw both covered over 10km during Sunday night's last-16 win, while Kyle Walker's top speed of 34.4km/h confirmed he is England's best chance of keeping up with France's Kylian Mbappe in the quarter-final.

Captain Kane runs around 11km on average when playing for England and his 10.8km against Senegal was rewarded with his first goal of the tournament.

Harry Maguire, who enjoys a burst out of defence, averages 10.89km per game when on England duty, while Phil Foden typically covers 10.62km when playing internationally.

When in the side, Raheem Sterling tops the charts for high-speed sprinting with an average of 1.3km done at speeds of over 25km/h.

Against Senegal, it was the midfield duo of Rice (62) and Jude Bellingham (61) who put in the most sprints with Shaw not too far behind with 56.

In that game, Kane ran 10.8km and Shaw 10.46km, but Rice eclipsed them all with his 12.06km, with the trio completing the 90 minutes.

Jordan Henderson, who scored England's opening goal late in the first-half, was approaching the 10km mark when he was replaced by Kalvin Phillips on 82 minutes.

Bellingham has passed 9km when replaced by Mason Mount with 15 minutes of the game left.

The data was collated by STATSports, who supply the GPS performance tracking equipment to the England team.

It is information that will be analysed extensively by England's backroom staff ahead of this Saturday's last eight showdown against France.

But what is for sure is another marathon effort will be required to beat reigning world champions France this weekend.

One of the major talking points has been how to contain the lightning-quick Mbappe and the data suggests Walker - as the fastest England player - is best equipped to contain him.

Mind you, Mbappe has been clocked at over 36km/h in the past so any foot race between the pair should be interesting.

Whether Walker remains part of a back four or in a three with either Kieran Trippier or Trent Alexander-Arnold offering support as a right wing-back remains the call of Gareth Southgate.

By means of illustrating how football has evolved, STATSports analysed England's famous 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany and recorded each players' movement.

Midfielder Alan Ball ran the furthest of any England player that afternoon at 8.55km, but it should be remembered that was over 120 minutes of play. Just 614m of that was at high-speed.

Skipper Bobby Moore covered just under 8km, Bobby Charlton 7.4km and hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst 6.53km.
