Wrexham Hollywood owner reveals striker Mullin will stay with him in California

Paul Mullin is to stay with Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney in California while he recovers from a punctured lung suffered in a friendly.

Mullin, 28, was flattened in an on-field collision with Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop on Tuesday during the match in San Diego, although the striker was released from hospital the following day.

With Wrexham's star striker still recovering from his punctured lung, one of Wrexham's Hollywood owners has confirmed that Mullin will remain with him in The Golden State until he was in a fit condition to fly home.

In an interview with S4C, McElhenney said: 'He's okay. I just texted with him this morning. He's in San Diego and he's going to come up and stay with us for a couple of weeks until he can leave and head back to Wales.'

Ryan Reynolds, who co-owns Wrexham with McElhenney, said he had reached out to Bishop following the goalkeeper's involvement in the collision that wiped out Mullin.

The Deadpool actor messaged the 23-year-old shot-stopper unprompted to thank him for the way he handled the incident, and wishing him well for the future.

Bishop is now set for a move to Championship side Sunderland, which appeared to be finalised before last week's incident in San Diego.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson's Wrexham are preparing for the start of their League Two campaign, and McElhenney was keen to get going.

The Mythic Quest star told S4C: 'I cannot believe it's beginning again, but I'm so excited. It's the first time that Wrexham will be in the EFL in 15 years. I think the whole town is going to come out for that as well. And we're hoping for a good outcome.'

When pressed about preparations, the 46-year-old said: 'We've been playing these friendlies, and I know that it's almost entirely the squad from last year. We've signed very few new players, of which I know they're a welcome addition.

'But this is a lot of the same team that won last year, so the chemistry is through the roof. And Phil truly believes that we have a chance to get promoted again.'

On his wishes for the forthcoming year, McElhenney said: 'I'd like to see us continue to compete and to be at the top of that table and have a chance at the end to move up to the next league.'

When asked if that was doable, he responded: 'Absolutely'.

Wrexham's league campaign begins against MK Dons on Saturday.
