Shaun Wright-Phillips' son D'Margio has been training with the senior Manchester City squad ahead of their Champions League match against Lyon on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old, along with fellow academy hopeful Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, helped make up the numbers as Guardiola prepared his team for their opening match against the French side.

Wright-Phillips has been in impressive form for City's Under 18 side so far this season, scoring once and assisting six goals in five games so far.

Like his father, who played for City for three seasons and was 20 when D'Margio was born, Wright-Phillips is a winger and is looking to follow his lead by eventually breaking into the first-team.

He has been on the books since 2011 and has also played for England Under 16s and Under 17s.

Speaking to City's website earlier this year, he underlined the influence his dad has had on his career and wants to wear his No 24 for City.

'Some people might think I’ve got in because of my dad but that’s not the case,' Wright Phillips said.

'My chosen number would have to be my dad’s old number, 24. At the moment my shirt number depends on where I play or if I am on the bench.

'I was a City fan growing up so it’s fantastic to be here. Ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to be a footballer.'

And professional football runs in his family, with Shaun's brother Bradley also emerging from City's youth academy and at present, also plays for New York Red Bulls in America.

He scored a hat-trick for them on Sunday against Wayne Rooney's DC United and has over 100 goals for them in total.

Ian Wright is also Shaun and Bradley's step-father, meaning he is step-grandfather to D'Margio.

Wright Phillips senior made his City debut in 1999 and played for six seasons before joining Chelsea in 2005 in a £21million transfer.

But at Stamford Bridge, consistent first-team opportunities were hard to come by in Jose Mourinho's star-studded squad and he returned to the blue half of Manchester in 2008 for another three seasons.

He finished his career in Major League soccer in the United States, via a spell at Queens Park Rangers, with New York Red Bulls and second tier side Phoenix Rising.

City host Lyon without boss Guardiola on the touchline because he is serving a one-match ban for being sent off at half-time in the second leg quarter-final defeat by Liverpool in the tournament last season.
