Yaya Toure criticises former agent over infamous Man City incident

Manchester City great Yaya Toure has said Dimitri Seluk 'did a lot of bad things' after splitting from his long-term agent earlier this year.

Toure and Seluk went their separate ways in August and the 36-year-old is now represented by Leon Mann as he eyes a career swansong back in the Premier League.

Former City midfielder Toure has hit out at Seluk over the infamous birthday cake incident of 2014, when Seluk claimed the Ivorian was considering leaving City over the club's failure to wish him a happy birthday.

“Yaya is so upset, he is thinking of leaving City,” Seluk said at the time. “There are a number of things that have happened that have left Yaya feeling bitterly upset. City have treated him with disrespect and have really hurt him.

“What happened at his birthday meant the club don't care about him. It was proof. They can say whatever they want, 'Oh we like him, but we forgot.' None of them shook his hand on his birthday. It's really sick."

Having initially distanced himself from Seluk's comments, Toure later tweeted: “Everything dimitry said is true. He speaks for me. I will give an interview after world cup to explain.”

Now Toure has spoken about the incident again and revealed his regret at supporting Seluk at the time.

“It's crazy,” Toure said in an interview with The Times. “The birthday cake damaged me a lot. When people see me in France or Africa, they say 'You want cake?' I was so p***** [off]. I was telling him [Seluk], you should not do that, no need. I talked with Khaldoon [Al Mubarak, City's chairman], and I was saying, 'It is not me, don't worry'.

“The bad mistake I did was doing [tweeting] 'OK, he [Selyuk] is right'. That's the one that's killing me. People started to believe what he said is me. The fans were reading this, thinking bad about me, and I can understand it.

“Before the birthday cake. I accepted it [Seluk's antics], because I respect [him]. You have to give him credit too, because he has helped me through a lot. But he did a lot of bad things. It was too much.”
