Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his return to the Sweden side as their kicked-off their Euro 2024 campaign against Belgium, but is still NOT the oldest player to appear in a European Championship qualifier.
At 41 years and 172 days, it was thought the Swedish striker had broke the long-standing record held by Italy's Dino Zoff, who appeared aged 40 years and 90 days during a European Championship qualifier in 1983.
Ibrahimovic earned his 122nd cap for his country in the 3-0 defeat to Belgium, coming on as a substitute for Newcastle hitman Alexander Isak with 13 minutes left to play.
However, although Ibrahimovic did overtake Zoff's milestone, he is still four days short of Gibraltar's Lee Casciaro, who started in their 0-3 defeat to Greece in Group B.
Casicaro has made a habit of clocking up records, the forward who plays his club football in Gibraltar with Lincoln Red Imps holds the record for most titles with one club (57), and is the current top goal-scorer for his county with three goals.
Unfortunately Ibrahimovic could do nothing to prevent Sweden from kicking-off their 2024 European qualifying campaign with a loss, as Romelu Lukaku's hat-trick saw Belgium get off to a perfect start under new coach Domenico Tedesco.
The veteran striker made his Sweden debut in 2001, before his international teammate Anthony Elanga was even born, and has scored 62 goals to make him his country's record goal-scorer.
Earlier this week the Swedish star did etch his name into the Italian record books, after his goal in AC Milan’s 3-1 defeat against Udinese made him the oldest player to score in Serie A history.
Ibrahimovic has only just returned from injury following an anterior cruciate ligament injury that he had been playing with for the six months of last season.
He however, played through the pain barrier to help Milan clinch the Serie A title with eight goals and three assists, before undergoing surgery last summer.
While he was sidelined his signed a new one-year deal deal with the Italian giants, and now could play a part in their bid to clinch a top four place, as well as their upcoming Champions League qualifier against Napoli.
The former Manchester United man could also have his eye on next summer's Euros in Germany, if Sweden manage to qualify from Group F.
If he was to make an appearance at Euro 2024, he would be the oldest player to play in the competition, overtaking Hungary's Gabor Kiraly who appeared aged 40 years and 74 days in 2016.
