NFL enter talks over staging a game with Bernabeu stadium a potential host venue

The NFL has entered discussions with Madrid's city council over staging a game in the Spanish capital next season.

According to Inmaculada Sanz - the vice mayor of Madrid - football chiefs have shown interest in bringing the sport to Spain amid plans to expand their current international series.

In 2023, England and Germany were selected as international hosts for five NFL games, with London putting on three of them and Frankfurt holding two.

It is believed Spain and Brazil are the current frontrunners to join the series in 2024, and Madrid officials have already opened negotiations with the league over a potential deal.

Vice-mayor Sanz said: 'I think it is good news for Madrid that the NFL has shown interest in our city for an international event as important as an NFL game.

'This continues to demonstrate that Madrid is a city that is fashionable in the world, that there are many promoters who approach us to tell us that they are interested in hosting this type of things in Madrid.'

Neither Spain or Brazil has ever hosted a regular-season NFL fixture, meaning one of the two countries could do so for the very first time in 2024.

Should the NFL head to Madrid next year, two LaLiga soccer stadiums will represent the most realistic options for host venues.

Santiago Bernabeu, the home of 14-time Champions League winners and global powerhouse Real Madrid, holds 81,044 seats and is one of the most famous sporting arenas on the planet.

However, Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium - which seats 70,460 people - would be another potential option if the city does stage a football game.

Three NFL fixtures took place in London earlier this month; with Wembley Stadium hosting the Atlanta Falcons vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars on October 1.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was then the venue for the Jaguars' clash with the Buffalo Bills a week later, before the Baltimore Ravens vs. the Tennessee Titans went down at the same arena last Sunday.

Next month, the Miami Dolphins will face reigning Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs at Frankfurt Stadium in Germany, with the Indianapolis Colts vs. the New England Patriots also taking place at the same venue.

The NFL is also considering moving its prestigious Super Bowl showpiece to London in the future, despite the next three events already being scheduled for the US.

'It is not impossible, and it is something that has been discussed before,' commissioner Roger Goodell said in London last week when asked about the possibility of the city holding a Super Bowl.
