Gabriel Magalhaes admitted that it was the actions of Arsenal's fans that prompted him to reject a transfer to Manchester United.
The 27-year-old has become one of Arsenal's most important players and established himself among the premier defenders in world football. After making a name for himself at Ligue 1 outfit Lille, the Brazil international found himself subject to interest from some of the Premier League's elite.
The Red Devils were one club that came calling for Gabriel but the man himself admitted that he was influenced by the positive messages Arsenal fans sent him that led to his move to north London.
"I’d always dreamt of playing in the Premier League," he said to talkSPORT in 2021. "And everyone knows Arsenal as one of the top clubs in the world. It’s true that Manchester United were also interested, but I was always focused on joining Arsenal.
"The fans sent some messages in the build-up and that was very important in my decision. Having been here for some time now, I am certain I made the right choice. I am very happy here, I’ve made some fantastic friendships and I hope we can win some trophies."
While he's yet to get his hands on any major silverware since joining the Gunners, he's cultivated an imperious defensive partnership with William Saliba who've contributed to Arsenal's solidarity at the back.
The France international – who faced off against Gabriel in Ligue 1 when playing for St-Etienne – discussed their partnership and just how close they've gotten as friends and teammates.
Speaking to the Official Arsenal Website, the 23-year-old said: "He’s like a brother to me we’re very close. As I always say to him, it’s as if he were French too, he has the same facial expressions as a French person because he was at Lille for a long time He’s a great guy and an incredible defender."
