Fourth-division side FC Saarbrucken have stunned the Bundesliga's Fortuna Dusseldorf after a dramatic sudden death penalty shootout in the quarter finals of the German Cup.

Saarbrucken, who only qualified for the tournament by winning their regional Saarland Cup, took their esteemed opposition to penalties and had been leading until the dying minutes of normal time.

The game was then taken to a penalty shootout and an incredible 20 penalties were required to separate the two sides.

The south-west regional league have now defeated a top-tier opponent for the second time in their incredible run to the semi-finals of the domestic cup, the most coveted German knockout tournament, and they could now face Bayern Munich in the last four.

Tobias Janicke opened the scoring for the home side after he converted an incisive counter attack midway through the first half to send the fans into a frenzy.

At the other end, goalkeeper Daniel Batz produced a string of stunning saves to deny the Bundesliga side on countless occasions.

And in the 83rd minute, Dusseldorf were awarded a penalty but yet again they could not find a way past Batz who dived low to his right to push the ball away to safety.

Dusseldorf, who have won the tournament twice and are currently managed by former Manchester City player and Leeds United boss Uwe Rosler, struggled to break down the stubborn Saarbrucken wall.

But they finally broke through when an injury time corner was converted by Mathias Jorgensen after it was nodded towards him by Dusseldorf's goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier who had come up for the set piece, sending the tie to extra time.

After a goalless 30 minutes, the tie was taken to a penalty shootout with a semi-final spot on the line.

Saarbrucken missed their first spot-kick before Dusseldorf missed their third to level the scores after six penalties.

But the home side missed again and appeared to be heading out before Batz dramatically pushed Dusseldorf's fifth penalty on to the post to take the shootout to sudden death.

A further ten penalties were required before Batz again was the hero as he secured Saarbrucken's place in the final four.

The David versus Goliath clash was played out in front of a packed out Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion in Volklingen, where the 10 euro tickets were being resold for as much as 1,200 euros

In this year's tournament, Saarbrucken have previously defeated the Bundesliga's FC Koln as well as second-tier sides Karlsruher SC and SSV Jahn Regensburg.

The only other non-Bundesliga side to make the final eight in this year's competition are 2. Bundesliga's Union Berlin, who face Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

In total, 64 teams compete in the DFB-Pokal, including all 36 teams in the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga, and the top four finishers in the 3. Liga.

Of the remaining slots, 21 are given to the winners of their regional cup competitions, and the final three are awarded to the three regional associations with the most men's teams.

The winner of the cup automatically qualifies for the group stage of the Europa League, and faces the Bundesliga winner in the DFL-Supercup.
