'A legend of the Italian game': Football fans across the world mourn the loss of Gianluca Vialli

Football fans across the world have paid tribute to 'legend of the Italian game' Gianluca Vialli who has died at the age of 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The former Italy and Chelsea striker's death comes just three weeks after he quit his role as a coach for Italy.

It also comes after the footballing world have recently mourned the loss of Sinisa Mihajlovic and Brazilian legend Pele.

There has been an outpouring of grief on social media for the latest footballing icon to pass.

One fan paid tribute to Vialli, saying: 'A legend of the Italian game, a trailblazer for the English game and a warrior who wouldn’t stop fighting until his final day. Rest in peace, Gianluca Vialli'.

Meanwhile another added: 'Another tragic loss of a legend. Farewell Gianluca Vialli'.

A third fan said: 'This is desperately sad news. Vialli was an icon to many of who watched footy in the 90's and what a player. RIP Gianluca.'

And Another added: 'Sad news about #Vialli brilliant player. 58 is no age.'

Vialli represented the Azzurri in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, won the Champions League with Juventus in 1996 and gained popularity in England during a short spell at Stamford Bridge.

Vialli would serve as Chelsea's player-manager and then manager, leading them to the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup in 1998, plus the FA Cup in 2000.

Another fan paid tribute, saying: 'What a player Vialli was. One of the first I can properly remember when growing up. That Chelsea era had some proper players. Vialli, Zola, Flo, Desailly. RIP.'

Meanwhile a Chelsea fan tweeted: 'RIP Gianluca Vialli. An absolute legend of Chelsea football Club. Thank you for everything my boss'.

One fan even recalled memories with Vialli, posting: 'Gianluca Vialli 58. Awful. Rip Luca. Used to see him down the driving range in Chiswick, lovely guy.'
