AS: Klopp ruled out as candidate for the Real Madrid job

Despite ongoing speculation, Real Madrid are focusing elsewhere while Klopp remains committed to his long-term international and Red Bull roles.

Jürgen Klopp and Real Madrid are once again heading in different directions. While the German coach is looking toward a future with the national team, Real Madrid’s decision-makers are exploring other options for their first-team bench. There is little more to it, and even less room for speculation.

Fans and media alike are eager to learn who will replace Álvaro Arbeloa, with anticipation steadily building around the next man to take charge at the Bernabéu. That urgency has fueled a flood of candidate lists, with numerous coaches linked to the job. The reality, however, is more restrained. Some of those names have never even been part of internal discussions at Valdebebas, while others have been floated through back channels, often as part of agents’ efforts to generate broader interest.

Klopp not part of Madrid's plans

Among the most eye-catching names is Klopp, a coach long admired by Real Madrid. Yet he has not featured in the club’s current selection process. As was the case in 2021, when Zinedine Zidane stepped down and Carlo Ancelotti’s return was only finalized weeks later, Madrid are in no rush to make a decision.

The link between Klopp and Real Madrid is nothing new. It dates back more than a decade, to their Champions League meetings with a Borussia Dortmund side packed with emerging stars like Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus, and Mario Götze. Since then, Klopp’s name has regularly surfaced as a potential Madrid coach. This time is no different, except for one key detail: inside Valdebebas, his candidacy has not been seriously considered.

Germany remains the priority

Klopp, for his part, is focused elsewhere. His long-term goal is clear: to manage the German national team. He has no intention of rushing that process and holds deep respect for current head coach Julian Nagelsmann. That has not changed since it was first reported, and it continues to shape his career path.

Until that opportunity arrives, Klopp will remain in his role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer, overseeing the company’s multi-club network.

Life after the touchline

Klopp stepped away from coaching in the summer of 2024. While several clubs have approached him since, the former Liverpool and Dortmund manager has been consistent in his stance. He needed distance from the daily grind of elite coaching, or at least from its relentless pressure.

Known for his hands-on approach and desire to shape every aspect of a squad, Klopp has often spoken about the toll of top-level management. For now, he is content stepping back from that intensity. Still, his reputation remains intact, and whenever he chooses to return, he will be one of the most sought-after coaches in world soccer.
