The Bayern Munich full-back came off the bench 10 minutes into the match against the United States.
Alphonso Davies started the match between Canada and the United States for Third Place in the Concacaf Nations League on Sunday, March 23; however, he was substituted in the 11th minute due to an injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
The Canadian full-back suffered a torn cruciate ligament that will prevent him from playing the remainder of the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals, and the 2025 Club World Cup with Bayern Munich.
The injury to 24-year-old Davies could have been avoided, as his agent, Nodal Huoseh , said he was unfit to play in the game against the U.S. national team ; however, the Maple Leafs' coaching staff didn't care and sent him onto the field despite the risks.
It's worth remembering that Davies suffered a thigh injury that sidelined him for six matches with Bayern Munich, and the team has sought to protect him from relapses.
Alphonso Davies' agent blames Canada for his injury
In a statement, Nodal Huoseh accused the Canadian national team's coaching staff of causing Alphonso Davies' cruciate ligament tear by claiming that the player was part of the starting 11 against the United States despite not being 100% fit, especially after the CONCACAF Nations League semi-final match against Mexico.
"I'm very disappointed. Alphonso wasn't 100 percent fit after the Mexico game , and it was widely expected he wouldn't be part of the squad against the United States. On Saturday night, the expectation was that he wouldn't be included in the XI. As captain, I think he was pressured by the coach to start the game," Huoseh told One Soccer.
"Alphonso isn't the type of player who says no in those moments. He ended up playing, and look what happened. The Canadian Soccer Federation needs to do a better job managing its players. Alphonso is now injured and very disappointed with how this injury happened," he continued.
"Fortunately, he's in wonderful hands with a world-class group at Bayern who will take great care of him. He's expected to undergo surgery in the next 24 hours," Davies' agent concluded.
