Angel Gomes has opened the door to a return to the Premier League but has admitted he has already turned down the chance to come back to England.
Gomes left Manchester United for Lille in 2020 and has been called up by Lee Carsley for England’s Nations League double-header against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
And that has put the 24-year-old midfielder into the transfer spotlight, especially as his contract with Lille expires in the summer of 2025.
Asked whether he had already received offers to return to the Premier League, Gomes smiled: “I have … but I believe everything will happen naturally and at its own time and I am really chilled.
“So, if something was to come up that did make sense, you never know in football …”
Gomes is unlikely to sign a new deal in France and Lille will probably look to get a transfer fee in January.
That means Gomes will be in the shop window if he makes his senior England debut and Spurs have already been linked with a player who can operate in a deep or forward midfield position.
Gomes, who joined Boavista on loan immediately after his Lille move, reflected on his moves so far. “I’d say the hardest point was obviously leaving England,” he said.
“Going to Portugal, into the unknown… there was project there for me to kind of immerse myself into but I never knew how it was going to go.
“It was a step into the unknown for me and then obviously going to France afterwards; learning a new language, adapting to the country, adapting to the football… it was a very difficult time for me to adapt to all of it. I knew in the long run, if I stuck to it, that I would be able to get to where I want to get to."
