Another Liverpool full-back could be heading to Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold got his Real Madrid career up and running this evening, making his debut against Al Hilal - and one of his old team mates could be about to join him in the Spanish capital - to join Madrid’s rivals.

Andy Robertson appears to be up for a fresh challenge in La Liga. The 31-year-old Liverpool left back has reportedly given the green light to a potential move to Atlético Madrid ahead of the 2025–26 season. For the Scotland captain, who’s spent the past eight years as the Reds’ first-choice left-back, a move to Atleti could be the perfect opportunity for him to continue competing at the top level of European football.

Robertson open to move to Spain

Sources close to Atlético say the club is well aware that Robertson views a move to the Metropolitano quite favorably. One of his main priorities is to continue playing in the Champions League and competing for trophies. With his experience, elite pedigree, and hunger for silverware, Robertson sees Atlético as a club that ticks all the right boxes—a competitive league, a clear path to titles, and a system that suits his attacking style of play.

The writing is on the wall for Robertson at Anfield. In many ways his time at the club has come full circle. And on top of that, Milos Kerkez’s arrival means his days as a regular starter are numbered. At 31, he understands that his chapter with the Reds is coming to a close—but he has zero intention of stepping away from top-tier European football.

Atleti looking for a cut-price full-back

Atlético still need to strike a deal with Liverpool to make Robertson’s move a reality. The Scottish defender has just one year remaining on his contract, Liverpool could recoup most or all of the $10.2 million fee they paid Hull City for the player to bring him to Anfield in 2017 and sources say the transfer fee shouldn’t be a major hurdle.

However, Atleti have no plans to shell out a hefty sum to reinforce the left flank. The club is prioritizing its transfer budget toward higher-value targets: Álex Baena, David Carmo (Cardoso), and Cristian “Cuti” Romero - provided Tottenham lowers its demands.
