Arsenal’s rough start
It is fair to say that Arsenal have not had the best of starts to the 2021/22 campaign.
The Gunners began their campaign against a Brentford side who were playing their first-ever Premier League tie.
The Bees would go on to pick up a 2-0 win, with Arsenal looking particularly flat throughout the game, especially at the back.
Next up for Arsenal was a clash with London rivals Chelsea, who completely dominated and probably should have won four or five nil, instead of the 2-0 win they picked up.
On the back of the Chelsea loss, it was revealed that Arsenal have opened a league season with two defeats and no goals after two matches for the first time in their history whilst playing in England’s top-four tiers:
Arteta has also now suffered his 20th defeat as Arsenal manager in the Premier League, in what was his 60th game. Arsene Wenger, on the other hand, didn’t register his 20th defeat with the Gunners in the PL until his 116th game.
The Spaniard’s record as Arsenal boss is also pretty similar to that of Unai Emery, who was sacked after losing 20 games:
On the back of these statistics, it was not to surprising to see it reported that Mikel Arteta has five games to turn Arsenal around or he could be facing a fight for his job:
Conte to Arsenal?
Should Arteta indeed leave, the above report from the Telegraph stated that the north London outfit are likely to make Antonio Conte their first choice to replace him.
Conte of course won the Premier League with Chelsea and ended Juventus’ reign of dominance over the Serie A with Inter Milan last season.
But whilst, on paper, Conte would look to be a significant upgrade on the floundering Arteta, it does not appear as though he would actually be willing to join Arsenal.
A recent report from the Independent instead claims that people close to the Italian insist he has little interest in taking over at the Emirates and that he does not think he could compete with the team they have now:
Those close to Antonio Conte insist he has little interest in taking over. He just doesn’t think he could compete with the team as it is.
