Argentina soccer star Yamila Rodriguez shows a tattoo of Ronaldo on her leg

It is rare to find an Argentine snubbing Lionel Messi in favor of Cristiano Ronaldo but Women's World Cup star Yamila Rodriguez has proudly chosen the Portuguese over the men's national team hero.

The heavily-tattooed 25-year-old was spotted on the touchline during Argentina's World Cup opener against Italy Monday with her left shin inked with the profile of former Real Madrid star Ronaldo.

The tattoo is a soccer paradox with Ronaldo rivalling Messi for the title of the greatest player over the past couple of decades.

But despite her nationality, Rodriguez has made no secret of her admiration for Ronaldo.

'My idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, not Messi,' she told ESPN Vivo last year.

She has also tried to rationalize her preference for the Al-Nassr player over the national hero, telling Argentinian newspaper Ole: '[Ronaldo] is, without a doubt, the best player in the world. I watched him play and thought: how can he be so perfect? He surprises me with everything that he does. With this tattoo, now I have Cristiano with me forever.'

Messi, who made his debut for MLS side Inter Miami on Friday, solidified himself as one of the - if not the - greatest in the game last year when he added the one trophy that was missing to his cabinet.

The 36-year-old lifted the World Cup for the Albiceleste - the first since Diego Maradona's triumph in 1986.

And, Rodriguez hasn't completely neglected her country's soccer success as she's also paid tribute to Maradona, immortalizing him in ink.

Above her tattoo of Ronaldo, Rodriguez also has Maradona's likeness inked on to her thigh.

The design shows Maradona's profile and his signature, along with three stars - one for every one of Argentina's men's World Cup wins in 1978, 1986 and Messi's feat last year.

Rodriguez has enjoyed success on the field herself. Left out of the roster for the 2019 Women's World Cup, she has had an unforgettable few years with Boca Juniors to ensure she booked her place on the plane to Australia and New Zealand this year.

She became the first woman to score at La Bombonera, reached the final of La Copa Libertadores with the Xeneize and scored in the Copa America.

Rodriguez played a big role in helping Argentina qualify for this year's tournament Down Under, where it looks to claim its first ever victory at a Women's World Cup.

However, their hopes took a hit as German Portanova's side slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Italy in its opener at Eden Park following a late goal from Cristiana Girelli.

The result leaves them needing them to rally and beat South Africa, if they hope to make it out of the group for the first time in their history.

South Africa is ranked 26 places below Argentina according to FIFA but almost pulled off an upset in its opener against Sweden as Hildah Magaia scored the opening goal before the Swedes ultimately rallied to a 2-1 win.
