Argentina’s celebrations in the wake of their World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022 were marred by racist incidents, targeting the France national team.
One chant in particular, created by Argentina fans in the wake of the World Cup final victory over France, was the source of controversy. The offensive and racist chant mocked the African origins of certain players within Les Bleus’ squad, including captain Kylian Mbappé.
The vulgar chant, which includes lyrics such as: “They play for France but come from Angola” and “Their mother is Nigerian, their father is Cambodian but on their passport: France”, has now been sung by the Argentina national team in the wake of their Copa América victory.
The chant was sung in the Argentina team bus, as shown in a live video, posted by Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez. In an attempt to avoid controversy, the live video was promptly interrupted by Fernandez but not before the racist chant, created back in 2022, was heard ringing around the Argentina team bus.
