Arsenal, Man United, Bayern Munich: Declan Rice is leaving, but where does he fit best?

  /  autty

With West Ham wrapping up their season on a high by winning the Europa Conference League on Wednesday, all eyes are now locked onto what happens next for Declan Rice.

The Hammers captain will leave the London Stadium this summer, with chairman David Sullivan revealing that Rice rejected a £200,000-a-week 18 months ago.

'It's cost him £10million to stay at West Ham in that time (in lost wages),' Sullivan said.

And so a new challenge beckons for Rice, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich all eager to land him.

'It's flattering to be wanted by a lot of clubs but the badge on my chest tonight is West Ham,' Rice said as he emerged from the celebrations in the dressing room following a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.

'I've got two years left on my contract and ultimately it's up to the people above. Until the day I walk out of this club I'll give absolutely everything and I'll wear my heart on my sleeve for this badge.

'The last two or three years it's been non-stop about me. To read it myself is actually getting quite boring. I see it all the time, but I can't help that, it comes with playing football every day and doing what I do.

'I genuinely don't know what's happening at the minute, that's my honest answer.'

Rice is an England international and viewed as one of the best midfielders in the division, meaning he won't come cheap.

But where would he fit best? Mail Sport takes a closer look at the teams in the running...

ARSENAL

At this juncture, Arsenal are convinced they are in pole position for the England international and are the frontrunners for his signature.

Mikel Arteta is a huge fan and has made Rice his No 1 target this summer - with a new anchor point needed in midfield with the departure of Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal have been sticking to a 4-3-3 system in recent months and while Thomas Partey feels like a natural anchor point, Rice could more than fill a role on the left of a three, with Martin Odegaard on the right of the trio.

But, alternatively, Rice and Partey would compliment in a tandem, should Arteta switch to a 4-2-3-1 set-up in games where he is keen to overload midfield and stifle opponents.

Arsenal are aiming to swiftly conclude a £90million swoop for Rice but face paying the West Ham skipper's full transfer fee inside two years.

Mail Sport revealed this week that the Gunners will table a formal offer for West Ham's triumphant captain in the coming days, with Hammers chairman Sullivan valuing Rice at over £100m.

It's big money but Rice is believed to be settled in London and is eager to play in the Champions League, two boxes Arsenal can tick.

Asked about Arsenal's transfer approach this summer, ahead of the final game against Wolves, and what he would tell interested players, Arteta said: 'By explaining who we are, how we do things, what we want from them, how we think they are going to fit in in our culture, in our club, and then trying to do the right thing as a club.

'Buying the right profile for the right amount of money that is going to fit what we are going to do, and in the end players and staff are going to make our car faster and more reliable to have a great season.'

Rice, who is also wanted by Manchester United, wrote his name into Hammers folklore on Wednesday night by leading his team to their first trophy since 1980 with a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.

Arsenal are prioritising reaching an agreement with West Ham before making final decisions on other transfer targets.

For example, Arsenal want to sign a new centre back this summer but are waiting to discover the final cost of the Rice deal before deciding which of their targets they pursue. Brighton's Moises Caicedo is viewed as a Rice back-up option.

Arsenal finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League last season but there is a sense that Arteta's young side are going in the right direction and have momentum.

Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Ally McCoist urged Rice to go for Arsenal and snub any other interest.

'If I'm Declan Rice and I'm weighing up my options, I'm probably thinking I'd rather go to Arsenal than Manchester United.

'I looked at Manchester United at the weekend, and I know they've won the League Cup, but they look as though they're four or five players behind Manchester City. I still think Arsenal are well behind Manchester City, but I think they've got the potential to get nearer to them quicker.'

MANCHESTER UNITED

Arsenal won't get a clear run to landing Rice - far from it.

He is one of the Premier League's best players and is an established England international, boasting World Cup experience.

In terms of fit, Manchester United would work - and the Mount situation has to be intriuging to Rice, one of the Chelsea star's closest friends.

On the pitch Rice would add immediate quality to a United midfield in need of an overhaul.

In Ten Hag's 4-2-3-1 he would slot in alongside Casemiro, particularly with interest in both Fred and Scott McTominay, who are not viewed as long-term options at Old Trafford.

At 24, Rice must be viewed as an investment for the next decade and with Casemiro now 31, he can be a perfect mentor to play alongside in a bid to lift United back into title contention.

The problem is the fee - near £100m.

United believe that Mount wants to join them from Chelsea, provided they can agree to lower the fee, but a simultaneous move for Rice appears difficult considering the finances required for everything they want this summer.

As reported by Mail Sport, United have opened discussions with Blues figures over Mount, who has one year remaining on his contract and is unlikely to sign a renewal.

However, United value Mount at around the £55m mark while Chelsea want £85m to offload their academy graduate, representing a potential stumbling block.

It is understood that United would consider using players in part-exchange as part of their interest in Rice, such as McTominay, whose current deal expires next summer.

Failure to knock that price down may veto any hopes of reuniting Rice with Mount next season, particularly with Ten Hag desperately needing a new No 9 this summer.

United will need to lean on the fact that Rice has openly praised Old Trafford and the Red Devils in the past.

Speaking after West Ham lost 1-0 at Old Trafford last year, Rice labelled the 'Theatre of Dreams' one of his 'favourite' stadiums to play at.

'I was loving it,' Rice said.

'Every time I come to Old Trafford, I've always said it's one of my favourite places to play. It's an amazing stadium.'

Old Trafford, plus sharing a midfield with best mate Mount? It may be a move outside of London but Manchester United tick a lot of boxes.

BAYERN MUNICH

And then there is Bayern Munich, the third horse in this race.

The first thing to consider here is that Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is a huge fan of Rice and wanted to sign him while he was in charge at Chelsea.

Sky Germany reported recently that Tuchel had a phone call with Rice to sell him on a move to Bavaria.

Tuchel and Bayern are desperate to land a commanding holding midfielder and it is claimed that Rice is the undisputed No 1 target.

With Barcelona chasing Joshua Kimmich, Ryan Gravenberch flattering to deceive, the jury out on Leon Goretzka and returning loanee Marcel Sabitzer set to be moved on, there is a void in Bayern's midfield heading into next season.

Fellow England star Jude Bellingham thrived with Borussia Dortmund, and is now preparing for Real Madrid, and Rice's game should translate well to Bayern.

But the snag for Bayern is that Mail Sport understands the player will prioritise a move to the Premier League this summer as he prepares to snub a move to Germany.

That's not to say there is no chance at all.

Tuchel is a determined man and often gets what he wants and Rice is certainly the one he wants most of all this summer.

Bayern Munich rarely splash the cash but when they do - like with defender Matthjis de Ligt - they don't hold back.
