Arsenal fans fume after Maguire blocks effort with his hand during 3-2 defeat

Arsenal fans were left raging at VAR and the officials after Harry Maguire blocked a shot with his hand in the penalty area during their 3-2 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

Michael Carrick's men were leading 2-1 with 20 minutes to go when Mikel Merino's effort struck Maguire's outstretched hand as he fell to the floor.

The decision was quickly checked and cleared by VAR and no further action was taken.

Rules state a player does not commit an offence if the ball makes contact with the hand or arm when supporting the body - believed to be the explanation given following the Maguire incident.

But Gunners supporters, frustrated at seeing their team beaten at home for the first time in the Premier League this season, were angry that a penalty was not given.

'Explain to me how this is not a handball,' Arsenal Fan TV wrote on X, accompanied by a still image of the ball hitting Maguire's hand.

Another said: 'Maguire turned into a goalkeeper.'

A third said: 'Clear handball from Maguire but no penalty. His hand even caused the ball to bounce off the pitch, how can it not be a handball?'

Others, however, admitted the officials made the correct call. 'It’s never given and it’s never a pen,' one Arsenal fan wrote.

Matheus Cunha's superb curling effort from distance three minutes from time won the game for United and handed Michael Carrick his second consecutive victory since he replaced Ruben Amorim as head coach.

Arsenal went ahead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal before an error by Martin Zubimendi gifted Bryan Mbeumo an equaliser.

Patrick Dorgu's sensational strike put United ahead early in the second half but the Gunners again hit back as Mikel Merino bundled home a scrappy goal from a corner.

But it was United who found a winner as Cunha's effort flew past David Raya and into the corner to maintain Carrick's perfect start.

Defeat means Arsenal are now just four points clear of nearest challengers Man City and Aston Villa at the top of the Premier League.
