Liverpool's confirmation as Premier League champions means Arsenal will likely finish as runners-up for a third straight season - and their fans want action this summer
Arsenal supporters have begged owner Stan Kroenke to splash the cash on a world-class striker after watching Liverpool win the Premier League title. The Gunners look set to be runners-up for the third straight season and fans believe action in the summer transfer window could take them to the next level.
With their side not playing, Arsenal fans had a lot of thinking time over the weekend and events elsewhere have conspired to further their demands. Liverpool secured the Premier League title with a 5-1 win over Tottenham at Anfield, which was always coming but still hurt for Arsenal, who have not lifted the trophy since the famous Invincibles did so in 2003/04.
Meanwhile, on the same day, their heads were turned by Viktor Gyokeres scoring four goals in Sporting Lisbon’s 5-0 win over Boavista. Gyokeres’ goalscoring record now almost doesn’t look real, reading 52 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches across all competitions.
The Swedish striker has been strongly linked with a move away from Sporting this summer – and Arsenal fans are desperate for them to join the race for his signature.
After Liverpool thrashed Spurs, a tweet from an Arsenal fan went viral. It read: “Hope Arteta had the squad watching that together at the training ground.” One fan responded with: “It’s his fault and the Kroenkes for an outrageous decision not to sign attackers in the summer. They might have f***ed the whole project.”
News that Gyokeres had filled his boots once more then filtered through Arsenal accounts on X, prompting a wave of requests. “I actually knew this season we wouldn’t win the PL glad that book is done,” one fan wrote. “We MUST sign Gyokeres or else this project is done.”
Another pleaded with the club: “@Arsenal please go and sign Viktor Gyokeres this summer!!” A third added: “Viktor Gyokeres Scored FOUR goals for Sporting tonight, that's 51 goals for club and country this season. I don't care what your opinion is, just bring him to Arsenal. Clinical.”
HAVE YOUR SAY! Who should Arsenal sign this summer? Comment below.
The opinion that Arsenal have lacked a prolific goalscorer has haunted them over the past few years of chasing the Premier League title under Mikel Arteta’s management. It was an easy conclusion to draw this season after injuries to Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli struck at the same time.
Arteta has fielded Mikel Merino up front over the past few months, and while the midfielder has had some success, it is clear a new forward is required this summer. The Gunners are expected to pay £51million to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but attackers are also on the wishlist.
New sporting director Andrea Berta has RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko on his list as well as Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is considered too expensive, and with several other clubs interested in Gyokeres, it could be that the Swede falls into the same category.
