Arsenal legend Vieira joins Eagles fans in pub ahead of Conference League tie

Former Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira joined Eagles supporters in a local pub before his former side's crunch Conference League clash with Strasbourg in France.

Vieira, who was part of the Arsenal Invincibles side that won the Premier League in 2004, managed the south London side from July 2021 to March 2023, having led them to the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley in 2022 and 12th-place in the Premier League.

After he was replaced by predecessor Roy Hodgson and then current manager Oliver Glasner, Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning last season's FA Cup, but were demoted to the Conference League due to multi-club ownership issues.

It seems, though, that Vieira still has a soft spot for Palace. He joined a group of fans as they serenaded him with a song they often sang during his time at the club.

Fans sang: 'We’ve got super Pat Vieira. he knows exactly what we need. Mitchell at the back, Mateta in attack, Palace on the way to Wembley.'

The Frenchman looked on awkwardly at first, before responding with a thumbs up and a pat on his shoulder to accompany a smile.

The former midfielder didn't give up on his managerial career after leaving Palace, and took on a role at Strasbourg in July 2023.

After a year, though, he departed, and took on a role at Genoa in Italy - a year on from that too, however, he left with the side bottom of Serie A.

Vieira's departure represented a rapid turnaround in events after club owner Dan Sucu had given him a public vote of confidence earlier in the week.

Sucu, 62, argued: 'Here we do not have a plan B, C or D. I have complete confidence in Vieira.'

He departed having overseen 37 matches, recording 10 wins, 12 draws and 15 defeats across all competitions.

Palace, meanwhile, are ninth in the Conference League table with two wins and a defeat from their three matches. They beat Dynamo Kyiv and AZ Alkmaar, but lost to AEK Larnaca in a disappointing home defeat.
