Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi will have a medical ahead of his move to Arsenal. The Spanish international has a £51million release clause and those payment between the La Liga club and Arsenal are already agreed.
Once the 26-year-old passes the medical, Arsenal will be in a position to announce Zubimendi's signing, which would be their first capture of the summer, reports the BBC.
It is understood that the relevant documents which relate to Zubimendi's switch to the Emirates have been signed. The club have a long-term interest in the midfielder, who excelled in last summer's Euros.
Liverpool were heavily linked with Zubimendi 12 months ago but Sociedad chiefs managed to convince their player to stay put. It is the second time in as many summers that Arsenal have gone to raid the Spanish club having signed Mikel Merino last year.
As well as Zubimendi the Gunners want to sign a new striker with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres among their preferred targets.
The Spaniard will bolster the Arsenal midfield, which has seen the likes of Declan Rice added to it in recent seasons. Jorginho has confirmed his departure and Zubimendi will give Arteta more options in the middle of the park with his versatility and skillset a huge plus.
Sociedad's president had previously said: "He's had several opportunities to leave and he'll make the decision he wants, because he'll have more options."
Arteta said on the club's transfer plans: "Josh [Kroenke] has been very clear in the direction and ambition we have. We're going to try and see what we can do, make very subtle decisions, and respect what has taken us this far. There's not much improvement. We've finished second three times, reached the Champions League semi-finals. There's that little percentage we need to nail."
There had been talk of Real Madrid attempting to come in and hijack Arsenal's move for Zubimendi. Xabi Alonso, who has just become the new boss at the Bernabeu, previously worked at Sociedad and saw the midfielder up close.
