Arsenal suffer transfer blow as Arteta sees derisory offer immediately rejected

Arsenal have seen a derisory £50,000 bid rejected for Wolves goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

The Gunners have been linked with the former Brentford and Bristol City stopper to add to their goalkeeping ranks. The 30-year-old has been identified as an ideal addition given his homegrown status that will allow them to satisfy both the Premier League and UEFA's quotas.

But they have seen their opening bid for Bentley dismissed by Wolves. Sky Sports report that Arsenal have lodged an opening £50k offer.

Wolves want far more than that having set a £1million price tag for Bentley, who signed for the club on a free transfer in 2022. The Midlands club would only consider selling should they be able to reinvest in a replacement.

Bentley has acted as a back-up to regular number one Jose Sa over the past couple of seasons. He has made seven appearances in all competitions for Wolves since his arrival at Molineux.

The ball is now in Arsenal’s court over whether to up their offer. Should they eventually strike a deal, Bentley would become the Gunners’ second goalkeeper signing of the summer.

They have already paid £30m to turn David Raya’s loan from Brentford into a permanent move. Arsenal have also been linked with Espanyol star Joan Garcia, amid competition from Real Madrid.

Should any goalkeeper arrive this summer, that could leave Aaron Ramsdale in a tricky position.

The former Sheffield United star saw his opportunities dwindle last term following Raya’s arrival on loan. He has already been linked away with an exit - Newcastle among those chasing him.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has underlined his thoughts on Ramsdale’s future and sees him staying at the Emirates. Speaking earlier this year, he said: “Suggestion? There is a big reality that Aaron is here because he is our player and has a contract.”

Ramsdale remains under contract until 2026 having only penned a new three-year deal last summer. Arsenal signed the England goalkeeper from Sheffield United in 2021 and he has gone on to make 89 appearances in all competitions since then.

He has also broken into the Three Lions’ set-up. Ramsdale has earned five caps for England and was named in Gareth Southgate ’s squad for Euro 2024. He has not appeared at the tournament yet with the Three Lions boss preferring Jordan Pickford.
