Arsenal are said to be stepping up their interest in Viktor Gyokeres but one former Gunners reckons Mikel Arteta and Co should target a different striker instead
Arsenal have been urged to target Victor Osimhen instead of Viktor Gyokeres by their former midfielder, Emmanuel Petit, who believes the Nigeria striker has 'more pedigree' than the sought-after Sporting Lisbon star.
The Gunners are expected to spend big on a new striker this summer should they come up short for a third successive season in the race for the Premier League title. And with speculation already starting to swirl over the club's transfer plans, a number of big names have been linked with a move to The Emirates.
Links to Newcastle's Alexander Isak have gathered pace in recent weeks but interest in Gyokeres - who was initially touted as a target last summer - has been stepped up, per The Athletic.
The Sweden international, 26, has plundered goals at a phenomenal rate since joining Sporting on a free transfer from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 and he is known to be admired by Arsenal's new sporting director, Andrea Berta.
Petit is of the opinion Isak would be the perfect signing for Arsenal. But with the Swede seemingly out of reach, Petit reckons that Osimhen, who is likely to be available for transfer this summer, would be a better signing for his old club.
The Frenchman told Pokerfirma: "If I was picking between Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, then I would go for Osimhen. Osimhen has more pedigree than Gyokeres – he would be the better choice for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.
"But, if I had to choose one striker that Arsenal should break the bank for this summer, then I have to put Alexander Isak in front of both Osimhen and Gyokeres. Isak already knows the Premier League, there’s no adaption period. He’s off the shelf, ready to deliver.

"He has shown so much quality. He's a top striker in the Premier League. He can score against any team, and I think he can add quality to Arsenal up front, which is something we need."
RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is the other striker Arsenal have monitored in the lead up to a crucial summer transfer window for Mikel Arteta, who will work with Berta for the first time.
The Italian arrives in London off the back of an impressive 12 year spell in a similar role with Atletico Madrid, who won La Liga twice during Berta's time in the Spanish capital.
