Arsenal are on the hunt for a striker this summer and Alexander Isak has been among those linked with Paul Merson adamant the Newcastle star would lead the Gunners to the title

Paul Merson claims Arsenal would "win the league by 10 points" if they secured the signing of Alexander Isak this summer. The Newcastle frontman is among the most sought after players in Europe after a sensational season.

The Swede has enjoyed a stellar campaign and will post career-best numbers in front of goal, which has helped Newcastle claim a first trophy in more than 70 years. Isak has continued to excel since moving to the Premier League from Real Sociedad in 2022.

Before he moved to England he was linked with the likes of Arsenal and Isak has scored numerous times against the north Londoners, who are in need of a prolific frontman. They've failed to land one in recent transfer windows but are expected to push hard for an elite forward this summer.

Mikel Arteta has missed out on the Premier League title once again but Merson believes signing Isak would prove defining and has backed his former club to win the top flight at a canter if they had the Swede leading their line.

He told Sportskeeda: “Alexander Isak is expected to attract interest from a few clubs this summer, but I feel like he could play the waiting game before deciding his future. Newcastle could be in the Champions League next season and they’ve already shown they can win silverware.

“Let’s not forget — they’re a big club now and, if they qualify for the Champions League, they’ll be an attractive project for any player. I think Isak surely wants to be involved in the Champions League next season and that will play a key role. Arsenal seem like the best possible move for him if he leaves Newcastle. If the Gunners get him, they will win the league by 10 points!”

Isak has shown no desire to leave St James' Park though and Newcastle are desperate to retain their frontman, which will be far easier if they are in the Champions League. If Arsenal did want to land the 25-year-old they would need to table a British-record fee.

Liverpool meanwhile have been credited with an interest in Isak as they look to build on their title success by adding more firepower. The Gunners have also been linked with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres, who have been prolific at their respective clubs.

Before Arsenal failed to sign a striker in January Arteta said: “We have to do what is right for the club. It is an option, but it doesn’t depend just on Arsenal - or Mikel - or our will. It depends on the market, and many other factors."
