Arteta drops hint on next Arsenal transfer after pre-contract agreement reached

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the club are "open" to adding to the squad before the January transfer deadline, with a new striker still a priority for the team.

The Gunners have jetted out to Girona for their final Champions League game, with the club's progress to the last-16 all but confirmed. Arteta's side know they only need a point to ensure they reach the knockouts in Spain.

In the Premier League, Arsenal remain six points behind league leaders Liverpool and Arteta knows that more additions could be crucial in bridging the gap to the Reds.

The team have been crying out for a new striker in recent months - especially after losing forward Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus to injury. Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Red Bull Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko have both been linked but it looks unlikely that a deal will be done for either this month.

With no deals on the horizon a week before the January transfer window slams shut on February 3, Arteta was quizzed about the likelihood of a new signing coming in, and if the club could recruit a player other than a striker.

He said at his pre-match press conference: "There are situations open and I always say the same, if we can improve the squad with players that can impact us now and in the future, we will try to do that if it is the best thing for the club, and I stand by that."

While there hasn't been too much news about incomings, Arsenal do know about at least one player who will be departing the Emirates.

Kieran Tierney has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates in the last couple of seasons - featuring just five times this term - and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers revealed on Tuesday the left-back would be returning to the club.

Tierney left his boyhood club for Arsenal for around £25million in 2019 after playing 170 times for the Scottish champions and will now look to resurrect his career back in Glasgow.

Speaking ahead of Celtic's Champions League clash against Aston Villa, Rodgers confirmed the deal and said he was hopeful that he could bring Tierney in this month.

He said: "Ideally it would (happen in January) but he’s still at this moment an Arsenal player. I think everyone is agreed that will definitely take place in the summer. If we can do it beforehand, then great."
