Diego Costa ruled the Madrid Derby as Atletico beat Real Madrid 4-2 to lift the UEFA Super Cup trophy.

2018/2019 UEFA Super Cup

2-4

Match Report

Saul Niguez scored a sensational volley to help earn Atletico Madrid a 4-2 UEFA Super Cup triumph in extra time against city rivals Real Madrid.

Diego Costa's wonderful goal after 49 seconds, the fastest in Super Cup history, got Atletico off to a flyer in Tallinn on Wednesday.

But Karim Benzema headed in Gareth Bale's brilliant cross and Sergio Ramos converted a penalty awarded for a Juanfran handball to turn the tie around for Julen Lopetegui in his first game in charge of Madrid.

Despite Diego Simeone serving a touchline ban Atleti showed their fighting spirit to come from behind themselves, Costa scoring from close range before Saul's stunning strike in the 98th minute settled a gripping contest.

The brilliant Costa then combined with Vitolo to set up Koke for a drilled fourth that gave Atletico bragging rights over their rivals as well as the first European title of the season.

1' GOAL! Real Madrid 0-1 Atletico (Diego Costa)

Wow, what a finish by Diego Costa, and after only 49 seconds! A long ball up from Godin is 'nodded on' by Costa, but he receives the ball himself ahead of Ramos.

Varane isn't strong enough as Costa gets past him, but he is at an acute angle with Navas to beat on the half volley. No problem for Costa! What a fine, fierce finish from near the byline, beating Navas at his near post! Brilliant goal!

27' GOAL! Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico (Benzema)

Bale is being tipped to be Real's central figure this season, and he's provided a beauty for Benzema here.

Racing down the right flank, his right-footed delivery is wicked. It catches Atletico out, and Benzema is at the back post to neatly head past Oblak at the far post.

30' CLOSE! Asensio's shot wide out

CLOSE! Nearly a second for Real in the space of two minutes! Asensio drifts forward with the ball, looks to curl one into the far post from 20 yards, but it goes just wide of Oblak's left-hand post.

63' Penalty Goal! Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico (Ramos)

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID!

Real have the chance to go ahead! Kroos drills a corner to the back post, Benzema is being wrestled by Juanfran, but the cross hits his arm! Excellent spot by the referee.

Sergio Ramos, of all people steps up, and finds the bottom right corner as Oblak goes the wrong way!

He's been a real thorn to Atletico in big finals, and he may end up scoring the winner here, too.

79' GOAL! Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico (Diego Costa)

A short throw catches Marcelo out, and Juanfran has a run down the right flank. He slips in Correa, who does brilliantly at the byline to take a touch and square for Costa.

Costa is found pretty much under the crossbar, and turns home! He gives the Real fans behind the goal a bit of stick. We could be in for extra-time here!

98' GOAL! Real Madrid 2-3 Atletico (Saul)

WOW. What a finish from Saul Niguez to put Atleti ahead!

Ramos puts Varane in trouble, and the Frenchman doesn't get the ball out of his feet inside the box as Costa nicks in. Thomas has it on the left, and pulls it back for Saul on the volley...

He has SO much to do from 15 yards, running onto it with his left foot, but he slams it into the top right corner! Brilliant, brilliant goal!

104' GOAL! Real Madrid 2-4 Atletico (Koke)

That should be that! It's another beautiful finish, this time from Koke.

Vitolo dinks the ball across the face of goal, slightly high, and Koke simply glides it into the bottom left corner past the reach of Navas from 20 yards!

Brilliant finish, and Atletico have completely turned this around.
