Newcastle 'join Barcelona in race to sign Juan Mata' on a free transfer (Sun)

Rafa Benitez wants Newcastle to join the race to sign Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata – who is out of contract this summer.

Benitez's future at St James' Park is also up in the air but he will push for a move should he stay on beyond the summer.

Barcelona are also looking at making a move for Mata during the transfer window should he not renew his deal at Old Trafford but Benitez is keen on a reunion with the 31-year-old, according to The Sun.

However, a potential move for Mata would present a few problems for the Newcastle boss.

Mata's age and his resale value goes against the club's strategy and structure with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley keen on signing players no older than 26.

The United playmaker's wage of £140,000 a week could also put off Toon chiefs with the Magpies unwilling to break their wage structure.
