Match Events

2' Atletico want a penalty early on!

A little over 60 seconds in and already there has been a flashpoint.

Atletico's players claim that Matuidi caught the boot of Griezmann when attempting to win a chest-high ball, but the referee does not feel it is worthy of a penalty.

8' Yellow Card! Costa booked and will miss next match

Ronaldo runs up to take the set-piece but there is a delay as Costa charges out of the wall, earning a yellow card that will rule him out of the return fixture.

8' NICE SHOT! Ronaldo's shot saved by Oblak

Ronaldo finally takes the 30-yard free-kick, which he thumps down the middle. Oblak was always expected to make the save and he does just that by helping it over the crossbar with a strong hand.

28' VAR denies Atletico a penalty

Costa leaves De Sciglio behind and the Juventus defender feels he has no choice but to bring his opponent down.

There is a small pull on Costa's shoulder but the contact is made outside the box and the striker covers a few more yards before going to ground.

29' CLOSE! Griezmann's free kick saved

After seeing his side denied a penalty by VAR - rightly, it must be said - a frustrated Griezmann blasts the free-kick towards the top corner. The ball moves in the air and Szczesny is happy to flap it to safety.

45+3' Partey is booked and will miss next games too

Thomas, like team-mate Costa earlier in the half, is shown a yellow card that will rule him out of the second leg. It was a bad challenge from the midfielder, catching Dybala late with a needless challenge.

50' BIG CHANCE! Costa's shot wide out

This is the biggest chance of the game by quite some distance. Chiellini gets his header all wrong and Griezmann plays Costa through.

The striker holds off Bonucci and has only Szczesny to beat when one-on-one, but he slots it horribly wide of the target.

54' CLOSE! Griezmann's shot hits the bar

Having missed a glorious chance a couple of minutes ago, Atletico have now come within the width of the crossbar to taking the lead.

Griezmann tries to lift the ball over Szczesny but the keeper gets the smallest of touches to it, helping it against the frame of the goal. Chiellini is first there to clear.

55' Yellow Card! Sandro booked and misses next match

Alex Sandro is cautioned for a coming together with Gimenez and is the latest player to be ruled out of the second leg.

Will either side have any players left when they face off again in three weeks' time?!

70' FOUL! Morata's goal disallowed

Incredibly cruel on Atletico as the referee Felix Zwayer, right in the thick of things today, disallows the goal after consulting with VAR.

It is deemed that Morata shoved Chiellini in the back before thumping the header past Szczesny.

78' GOAL! Atletico 1-0 Juventus (Gimenez)

Gimenez blasts the ball into the back of the net to score a goal that will surely stand this time.

Morata powers a header goalwards from the corner, it comes off Mandzukic and Gimenez is there to sweep the loose ball home from seven yards.

83' GOAL! Atletico 2-0 Juventus (Godin)

Atleti's other Uruguayan centre-half, Godin, doubles the home side's advantage!

It comes from another set-piece delivery, this time taken by Griezmann, with the loose ball being guided into the back of the net from an acute angle by Godin via a deflection off Ronaldo.

89' SAVE! Bernardeschi's shot saved by Oblak

Atletico's defenders perhaps expected Ronaldo to shoot from the free-kick, despite the angle being against him, but he instead tees it up for Bernardeschi. The substitute's shot is well hit but far too central, meaning a straightforward save for Oblak.

Match Report

Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin struck late to earn Atletico Madrid a 2-0 victory in an entertaining first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Juventus.

Gimenez picked up the pieces at a 78th-minute corner to drill home the opener, before Diego Godin's strike five minutes later deflected in off former Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Alvaro Morata had earlier been denied a goal against his old club by VAR, while Juve's best chance saw a Ronaldo free-kick tipped over by Jan Oblak in the first 10 minutes.

The Serie A champions looked on course to take a goalless draw back to Turin until Atleti, who will have Diego Costa and Thomas Partey suspended for the return trip, snared the victory.
