Barca 'target bringing Aguero on a free transfer' during final phase of his deal

Barcelona are eyeing a move to sign Manchester City star Sergio Aguero on a free transfer, according to reports.

The Argentine has entered the final six months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and is still waiting for the Premier League side to offer him a new deal.

However, his current contract status means he is free to negotiate with foreign clubs this month, and according to The Sun, that has alerted Ronald Koeman's side, who are keen on bringing the former Atletico Madrid striker back to LaLiga.

The Dutch boss has tried a number of options in the centre forward position this season following Luis Suarez's departure, and appeared to have struck gold with Ansu Fati before he suffered a knee injury in November.

Most recently, he has tried Martin Braithwaite, Antoine Griezmann and even Lionel Messi as the central figure, but should the latter choose to stay on at Camp Nou, there is the potential for him to be joined by his compatriot and close friend Aguero.

Speaking back in October, Aguero revealed he and Messi are 'like an old married couple' when they are on international duty together.

The claims come just a couple of days after reports in France claimed new Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to seal a sensational move for Aguero this summer.

Agent Bruno Satin,  who has represented the likes of Olivier Dacourt and Michael Landreau, revealed Pochettino is prioritising moving for Aguero and making him his first big signing at the Parc des Princes.

Aguero, 32, has only managed three starts and two goals for City this season after returning from knee surgery, and has yet to complete 90 minutes.

As a result, City have been reluctant to make an offer until he can prove his fitness.

The absence from the side of City's record goalscorer - who has not started a game since October due to knee and hamstring problems - is set to continue after boss Pep Guardiola revealed he is 'isolating for nine or 10 more days' after coming into contact with a person who has coronavirus.

'The only important news is that the last 10 or 15 days before isolation, he was perfect,' the City boss said regarding the striker, who himself tested negative.

'He reacted good and this is the best news. The best part of the season is coming and hopefully we can have him.

'He'll lose training sessions, and he's a guy who needs training with his better condition in his knee.'

Aguero will therefore miss City's run of three home Premier League fixtures in a week, starting with Brighton at the Etihad on Wednesday, followed by Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

The Argentine has won four Premier League titles, five League Cup trophies and an FA Cup during a trophy-laden spell in Manchester.
