Barcelona target Ferland Mendy, Filipe Luis and Junior Firpo at left back

Barcelona have identified three players as they look to add strength in depth behind Jordi Alba at left back this summer.

Alba is currently unavailable due to a suspension and his absence has shone a light on the lack of options available to Ernesto Valverde on the left side of defence. Previous deputy Lucas Digne was sold to Everton in the summer.

There are also concerns over Alba's contract situation  with his current deal set to expire in June 2020. The 29-year-old is expected to renew in the near future but Barca are keen to bring in another option anyway.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are keen on a move for one of Lyon's Ferland Mendy, Filipe Luis of Atletico Madrid and Real Betis's Junior Firpo.

Mendy is said to be the leading candidate after catching the eye of fellow Frenchman and Barca sporting director Eric Abidal.

He signed a new deal with Lyon last year until 2023, meaning the Spanish side will have to pay a sizeable fee to recruit him.

Mendy recently admitted in an interview with France Football that he hopes Lyon's upcoming Champions League tie with Barcelona can propel him to new heights.

He said: 'If my performance against Barça can open the doors? We'll see.

'These matches against Barcelona can make me public. And it will allow me to know at what level I am.'

Another target is veteran defender Luis. His contract at the Wanda Metropolitano runs out this summer and would therefore be available on a free transfer.

He would provide sufficient  back-up for Alba and his age would mean he could provide a short-term solution to the problem until highly-regarded youth prospect Miranda is capable of making the step-up into the first-team.

Firpo is the third and final target but has a sizeable £43.7million buyout clause at Betis.

He caught the eye in a 4-3 win at the Nou Camp earlier this season and reports suggest there could be some negotiation on the fee if youngster Miranda was included in any deal.
