Bayern Munich 'want to sell Jerome Boateng this summer to avoid losing him for free next year'

Bayern Munich are looking to sell Jerome Boateng this summer in order to avoid losing him for free at the end of next season, according to reports.

The defender has featured regularly for the Bundesliga side since Hansi Flick took over from Niko Kovac in December, but the 31-year-old is out of contract in 2021 and is yet to sign a new deal.

According to Sport Bild, the club want to sell but Boateng would like to fulfil his contract or sign an extension.

The outlet also claim Bayern have not received any offers or begun negotiations with the World Cup winner.

The defender played a crucial part in the club's march to their eighth successive Bundesliga title, taking his place at centre back alongside David Alaba.

Boateng has filled in admirably while Niklas Sule has been injured. The 24-year-old is back in training after rupturing his cruciate ligament in October but is not yet fit to make a return to the team.

This means Boateng is likely to start against Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.

The Germans have a 3-0 lead from the game at Stamford Bridge and are the favourites to progress to play either Barcelona or Napoli in the quarter finals.

This could give Boateng the opportunity to play his way to a new contract if he does enough to impress the club's board.

The centre back has been at the Allianz Arena since 2011 after leaving Manchester City following a disappointing spell in the Premier League.
