Belgian PL match between Anderlecht & Genk to be REPLAYED after VAR error

A full replay of a Belgian Pro League match between Anderlecht and Genk has been ordered following an error by the video assistant referee (VAR).

The incident took place during Genk's 2-1 loss to Anderlecht at Lotto Park on December 22, where Yira Sor scored from a rebound after a missed penalty.

VAR disallowed Sor's goal, citing encroachment by Sor himself in the penalty area but overlooking encroachment by two Anderlecht players.

Genk filed an appeal, arguing that VAR misapplied the rules, and their appeal was upheld.

According to Law 14.3 of the International Football Association Board, if both defending and attacking players encroach during a penalty kick, the penalty should be retaken regardless of the kick's outcome.

Genk, in a statement, revealed that the Disciplinary Council for Professional Football deemed itself competent to rule on the matter and overturned the earlier decision by the Professional Referee Department not to replay the match.

The council acknowledged Genk's argument that the match officials had misapplied the rules during the penalty phase.

No date for the replay has been set yet. Genk currently holds the fifth position in Belgium's top flight, while Anderlecht, with a record 34 league titles, occupies the second spot.

This decision to replay a match due to VAR error contrasts with a situation in the Premier League in October, where the league declined to order a replay after Liverpool's controversial loss to Tottenham.

In that instance, VAR failed to overturn an on-field decision that incorrectly disallowed a Luis Diaz goal for offside, attributed to 'significant human error.'
